Pioneer DEH-P6100BT

The Pioneer DEH-P6100BT is a mid-grade in dash cd reciever unit; which was first announced at the 2009 CES event in Las Vegas. The P6100BT is part of Pioneer's latest CD reciever lineup which also includes the Pioneer DEH-P7000BT, Pioneer DEH-P7100BT, and the Pioneer DEH-P9800BT. The P6100BT includes CD, Satellite radio and HD radio support as well as content playback from a USB media device. It is fully equipped with Supertuner IIID advanced digital and analog processing technology combined with a built-in MOSFET 50 W x 4 amplifier to ensure high quality sound output without any distortion or background noise. The small LCD display screen can handle 13 text characters on screen; meaning it can completely show song track information. Bluetooth receiver technology is built right into the unit; so users may use a hands free phone system directly through the device without purchasing any separate adapters or add-ons. An Apple iPod can also be plugged directly into the USB port with full compatibility; meaning users will never run out of new music on the road again. The Pioneer DEH-P6100BT has a suggested retail price of $260 and will be released sometime in Spring, 2009.

Offering Bluetooth and USB in this package was the deal maker for me, along with compatibility with my existing Pioneer radio. I put these into classic cars where the radio is between the front seats, making looking at them unsafe. Pioneer is the only manufacturer I've found that offers a wired remote with an LCD display. This makes the radio position workable in these old cars.

The USB iPod control is perfect, don't listen to those who complain about no cable, you already have the cable if you own an iPod! But the options don't stop there. Bluetooth Phone support is one thing, but Pioneer support BT Audio as well giving you even more ways to play your favorite tunes. And the BT connected to my LG Chocolate, something that not all BT units will do. Pioneer added support for 'other phones' and that made all the difference. The included microphone has a very long cable, so you can put the mic where you want, even on the sunvisor.

With this unit in your car you suddenly have most of the modern electronic conveniences that come in today's cars. Get a phone call? No problem, the stereo mutes when you answer it. Voice quality is great so far, I've yet to test it at high speed, but the mic mounting options are enough that you can't miss! In my case I didn't use any of the optional mounting brackets, so the install is very unobtrusive and compact while allowing it to aim directly at the driver for great pickup.

The radio has three outputs for amps, is very easy to connect to the car and speakers, and is HD ready. I'd have liked to get the HD in the box, but given all the rest you get that's hardly a problem. The fact that I can do it is excellent.

Finally, the face design is gorgeous although the ring of buttons around the multi-control are rather small. This is a complex unit, so time with the manual is vital or you will miss a lot of features and capabilities. I would love a rear USB connection, but I'm also not sure how I'd use it since I need the iPod cable in the house at times. The auxiliary jack is another sign of the thoroughness of this unit's design. Pioneer do want you to buy their iPod or USB flash drive cable, they are concerned about the hazard of such a thing sticking out of the dash (but not so concerned as to make the USB a proprietary design to force you to buy their cable). A lovely piece of equipment that will add style to any dashboard. If BT and iPod are things you want with a fully featured radio capable of much more, this is the unit!
