Pioneer VSX-520
$229.00
Released March, 2010
The Pros:Controls are simple, easy to use once you get used to it. Capable of 3D passthrough (HDMI 1.4a). Affordable price point - perfect for the vast majority of users who only need basic receiver functionality at a low price.
The Cons:No video conversion at all - cannot upconvert SD. Remote is crowded with many small buttons packed together. Documentation is confusing and doesn't cover everything.
The Pioneer VSX-520 is a low-cost 5.1 channel A/V receiver. There are some Pioneer firsts on the VSX-520 (as well as its companion, the VSX-820), such as the wireless Bluetooth transfer feature.

With the Pioneer AS-BT100 Bluetooth adapter (sold seperately), you can transfer music directly from your Bluetooth-enabled device (like iPhone, BlackBerry, or Android smartphones, laptops, etc.) to your home theater system. When playing content from such devices, as well as portable media devices, the Pioneer VSX-520's Advanced Sound Retriever enhances the sound of the file to near CD quality. In promotion, Pioneer has made much of the fact that the VSX-520 and VSX-820 are 3D-ready, meaning they support the latest HDMI specifications, and will fully display the nuances of the 3D audio/visual format, which is increasingly popular. The VSX-520 is a slightly cheaper version of the VSX-820, which has more features.
