Samsung PN50C450

Samsung's PN50C450 is a flatscreen plasma display from the 2010 lineup of entry-level 720p units. It has a 50" screen and is almost identical to the model below it, the PN50C430, with the only differences being that this one does not have a USB port, while it does have an additional HDMI port as well as a PC DSub connection. Other than these, the specifications are the same. These include a clear, glare-reducing coating that enhances contrast and black aspects of the image, an automatic light sensor that adjusts brightness to save energy based on room conditions, and built-in stereo speakers. It also uses the 600Hz subfield motion image blur reduction to make moving images more smooth. This model is slightly more expensive than the PN42C430.

Samsung's PN50C430 is part of the 2010 edition of entry-level Series 4 plasma TVs, and it has a 50" flat panel display. This model has the exact same specifications as the smaller 42" model except for its larger screen. It displays video in a vibrant range of colors and up to 720p resolution. Its main features include a very clear front panel that greatly reduces glare coming off the surface, which enhances contrast and darker areas of the picture. This display uses 600Hz subfield motion, which reduces blurring and makes moving images or text appear more fluid. Other features include a USB input and a light sensor that automatically adjusts screen brightness to accommodate lighting conditions in any room and potentially save energy.

The LG 50PS60 is a 50" Full HD 1080p Plasma HDTV from LG's 2009 PS60 series with a super bright panel and 600Hz smooth motion picture processing to produce crisp images. The TV features THX Display Certification and Cinema Mode but sits below LG's flagship PS80 series since it lacks the ethernet connectivity and THX Media Director technology which are included with the PS80 models. The 50PS60 is designed with a single-layer panel that makes the panel look like a pane of glass and comes in a variety of bezel colors. Panasonic's TH-42PZ700U is the world's first 42" television that offers a FullHD 1080p resolution for the average consumer. Many people don't feel that 1080p is necessary at this display size since you have to sit quite close to the television (4 feet) to appreciate the difference. However, the increase in resolution does offer picture quality benefits as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD content does not have to be scaled in any way.

Image scaling and processing is all accomplished internally, though there is no support for the common Picture-In-Picture feature. In total there are 9 different display modes, five for HD sources including a mode that allows for pixel perfect accuracy, and four for standard definition.

Other features include Panasonic's EZ-Synch technology which allows other Panasonic home theatre devices that are connected to the television's HDMI port to be controlled directly from the television itself. The TH-42PZ700U also comes with an SD memory card reader to display digital pictures.

Positioned above 80U series and below the 800Us, the 85Us feature the same core technology as the more expensive sets but sacrifice some of the more advanced features such as THX Certification and the 4th HDMI input. It first became available in the late-February.

Clarification on 24p handling - Unlike the higher end PZ800U and PZ850U series, both the PZ80U and PZ85U series perform a 3:2 pulldown on 24p content. What this means is that the 24 frames per second signal is converted into a 60Hz display, with one frame showing for 3 refreshes, and the next frame showing for 2 refreshes. The PN50B860 is the smaller of Samsung's two top-of-the-line Series 8 plasma HDTVs, and has a 50" display, 3 000 000:1 contrast ratio and 1920 x 1080 resolution. It has a very thin, 1.2"-deep frame with numerous inputs and colored translucent bezel. It can also access the Internet to view online content, and DLNA wireless access allows the TV to access personal media stored on other computers. The PN50B860 also has several of Samsung's high-end features, including e-panel glare reduction, an HD engine that imitates cinema quality, very high contrast ratio, and universal remote control which is compatible with other Samsung A/V equipment. The PN50B860 has numerous inputs and a native 1080p resolution. The next plasma TV above this one in Samsung's lineup is the PN58B860, with the same features but larger screen.

Hitachi P50S602 is a full HD1080p Plasma HDTV 50" in size. Released in May 2008, this TV has good value for money considering it's only $1,700. It has PictureMaster™ HD VI Processor and Full HD1080P (1920 x 1080 Resolution) which means that this television can display images that are significantly sharper and more realistic than regular televisions, as long as the source is high definition such as Blu-Ray DVD. One problem is that it only has rear connections. This TV is suited for home theater, which makes it ideal for DVD movies recorded in the popular 16:9 format. Considering it's specs and price point, this TV is suited for families or individuals who value high quality display for movies and entertainment, but won't satisfy those that demand top quality and are willing to pay for it.

The VIERA X14 Series is part of Panasonic's entry-level line of plasma HDTVs, and is one of the only Series that offers a 720p native resolution. The X14s are really just a stripped down version of the X1 line with a worse contrast ratio and some extra features such as the Game Mode and Image Viewer removed. Fundamental specs such as the NeoPDP panel with 600Hz sub-drive and the 900 lines of motion resolution remain the same.

X1 and X14 Series Features

NeoPDP - this is Panasonic's marketing name for their new plasma technology introduced in 2009. Specifically, Panasonic claims that they focused on improving black levels, contrast ratio, and motion resolution.

Black levels are notoriously important to videophiles and are something that plasmas do better with compared to LCDs. With the NeoPDP tech, Panasonic is looking to take Pioneer's claim of blackest black. Alongside the darker blacks is the higher contrast ratio with the native contrast ratio of 40,000:1 being one of the best that Panasonic has claimed. This line however has a specified native contrast ratio of 30,000:1.

The "over 900 lines of motion resolution" means that when there is action going on in the video, the TV is able to display most of the content accurately. This is a subtle point, because most people think 1080p means 1080 lines of resolution; however, most TVs released before 2009 while claiming 1080p resolution didn't actually display all 1080 lines of resolution when there was activity on the screen. The higher end Panasonic plasmas display all 1080 lines of motion resolution, while this series and the lower end models display "over 900 lines".

VIERA Link - this is the marketing name given to Panasonic's implementation of the HDMI-CEC standard, which lets you control your other compatible home theater equipment directly from your TV. The Samsung PN63B590T5F is a high-end plasma HDTV with a large, 63"-diagonal widescreen. Samsung's PN58B530 is a 16:9 aspect ratio, 50" widescreen plasma HDTV. It was released at the same time and is almost identical to the PN58B540, and the two have the same physical dimensions and suggested price. It is also the step-up in size from the smaller PN50B530, with the same features except for screen size and upgraded speakers, 15W instead of 10W. The PN58B530 does not have two of the PN58B540's features, which are Samsung's "WideColor Enhancer2", which is supposed to allow selectable color settings, and a slightly easier to use HDMI interface to connect multiple HD devices to the TV.These include Samsung's e-panel glare reduction, better energy efficiency than previous models, and faster image processing when game mode is on. This TV has numerous video inputs and a dual-tuner for digital or standard signals.

Its display resolution is 1920 x 1080 and has a 2 000 000:1 contrast ratio. It has Samsung's e-panel bright room glare-reduction feature, and it also has a game mode that speeds up image processing to increase game image quality. It is also about 40% more efficient than the models from the year before, and Energy Star compliant. The remote can also act as a universal remote to control numerous A/V devices, as long as they are also Samsung brand and HDMI compliant. It has numerous video inputs, and a dual-tuner for digital ATSC and standard NTSC signals. The only significant change in specifications from the 50" model aside from screen size is that the stereo speakers have a 15W output, as opposed to 10W. The larger display gives the PN58B540 a substantially higher price point as well
