Like others of its kind (predecessors XAV101 or XAV2001) the Netgear XAV2501 Powerline AV+ 200 Ultra Adapter creates a high speed Ethernet home network for the buyer by using existing powerlines instead of installing new Ethernet lines. A notable improvement, however, is the extra noise-filtering outlet included on the front of the adapter included in response to criticism that previous Netgear adapters obstructed any other outlets near the one they were plugged into because of their size. Other than that, the idea is the same: plug one adapter into the wall and into a router and put the other anywhere in the house, where it offers a single Ethernet port for any Ethernet-enabled devices to be connected. Once connected, these devices (such as HDTVs, Blu-Ray, gaming consoles, computers or laptops) can share documents, storage, games, or HD videos across a high speed connection of 200 mbps, with 128-bit AES security encryption that can be set up with the press of a button. The D-Link DHP-300 is one of three powerline adapters (DHP-300, DHP-301, DHP-303) designed to move Ethernet data across power cables to any outlet in one’s home or office. Unfortunately the discontinued DHP-300 hosts just one adapter. The problem is that two adaptors are required—one for the router, and another for the connecting device (computer, console, etc.). Assuming the user purchases the DHP-300 with an extra adapter, they can then share files at a theoretical speed of 200Mbps, assuming no traffic interference from any high-power devices also drawing electrical power. Testing by critics has revealed an average speed slower than a draft-n wireless router, but faster than an 802.11g router.

The Belkin Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit is a powerline adaptor released in 2009 as a flagship unit. At the time, Powerline technology was limited to 200Mpbs. The D-Link DHP-307AV is a powerline adaptor starter kit described by critics as being the first one from D-Link to comply with the 2005 HomePlug AV specification, which means its compatible with most products. Featured are two 10/100Mbps adaptors—one which transmits from the router to the electrical system, and the other which receives from the electrical system and then transmits to a PC or whatnot. Unfortunately, the kit doesn’t have a pass-through power socket. This in turn means users lose access to two plugs while the devices are in operation. Both belong to the same line of Powerline products, and both work the same way. By plugging in and connecting one adapter to an internet router, and plugging in and connecting the second adapter to any Ethernet-enabled device via the Gigabit Ethernet port, the existing electrical lines of a house are used to create a high-speed Ethernet network. The ZyXEL PLA402V2 is a powerline ethernet adapter that uses existing home power wiring. The device connects to the household power lines and, optionally, the coax cabling, and runs Ethernet standard communication through those wires providing a standard RJ-45 connection. Up to 200Mbps of bandwidth can run through the device, and the 10/100Mbps Ethernet standards are observed with MDI/MDIX. QoS standards, however, are not observed with this device so interference may decrease the available bandwidth. The ZyXEL PLA470V2 is a powerline ethernet adapter capable of transmission rates of up to 200Mbps. While similar in many ways to the ZyXEL PLA407, this device has a total of 4 separate 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports. A total of 16 devices communicating on a network is supported, and the 128-bit AES encryption standard is supported in order to keep communications between the devices secure. An Encrypt button allows security functions to be switched on and off as needed. A multi-colored LED indicates when the power is on as well as when activity is ongoing through the network. This model has been replaced by the Zyxel PLA401V2, and doesn't have the same QoS noise filtering technology that later models adopted.
