Netgear XAV2501

Like others of its kind (predecessors XAV101 or XAV2001) the Netgear XAV2501 Powerline AV+ 200 Ultra Adapter creates a high speed Ethernet home network for the buyer by using existing powerlines instead of installing new Ethernet lines. A notable improvement, however, is the extra noise-filtering outlet included on the front of the adapter included in response to criticism that previous Netgear adapters obstructed any other outlets near the one they were plugged into because of their size. Other than that, the idea is the same: plug one adapter into the wall and into a router and put the other anywhere in the house, where it offers a single Ethernet port for any Ethernet-enabled devices to be connected. Once connected, these devices (such as HDTVs, Blu-Ray, gaming consoles, computers or laptops) can share documents, storage, games, or HD videos across a high speed connection of 200 mbps, with 128-bit AES security encryption that can be set up with the press of a button. Note that one adapter is needed per device because they only have a single Ethernet port. The XAV2501 includes an Ethernet cable, Setup CD and 1 year warranty and is compatible with Mac OS X and Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

Features:

Creates a network capable of sharing HD video, VoIP, photos, documents, networked games and storage

Includes a filtered, noise-reducing AV outlet on the front of the adapter

Pick-A-Plug display increases performance

Networking Feature: Bridge

Connection speed: 200 mbps

Network Connectivity Technology: Wired

Supports Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and HomePlug AV (HPAV)

128-bit AES security encryption offers easy setup with one button

Plugs into standard HomePlug AV outlet

Includes Setup CD and installation guide

1 year warranty

LEDs indicate status; powers down automatically when not in use

Compatible with Mac OS X and Windows 2000/XP/Vista

Dimensions: 2.6" (W) x 1.6" (D) x 5.4" (H)

D-Link DHP-300

The D-Link DHP-300 is one of three powerline adapters (DHP-300, DHP-301, DHP-303) designed to move Ethernet data across power cables to any outlet in one’s home or office. Unfortunately the discontinued DHP-300 hosts just one adapter. The problem is that two adaptors are required—one for the router, and another for the connecting device (computer, console, etc.). Assuming the user purchases the DHP-300 with an extra adapter, they can then share files at a theoretical speed of 200Mbps, assuming no traffic interference from any high-power devices also drawing electrical power. Testing by critics has revealed an average speed slower than a draft-n wireless router, but faster than an 802.11g router.

Netgear XAVB5001

While Powerline technology (which converts existing electrical wiring into high-speed Ethernet connections) is already well established as an idea, the technology itself continues to leap forward with Netgear's XAVB5001 AV 500 Adapter Kit, whose connection speed is more than double that of its predecessors (such as the XAVB101, XEB1004, XETB1001) and peers (such as Linksys' PLK200 or PLK300). The fundamental setup is the same: plug in one adapter and connect it to an internet router, then plug in the second adapter anywhere in the house and, via the Gigabit Ethernet port, connect any Ethernet-enabled device (HDTV, VoIP, Blu-Ray player, computer, or game console). Any device on the network can now share internet, games, storage, data and even stream HD videos at 500 mbps. The adapters feature such longstanding Netgear staples such as Push-and-Secure (which sets up network security with one push of a button), Pick-A-Plug (which tests connections automatically for better performance), and compatibility with Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac OS X. Note that more adapters or an Ethernet swtich will be needed to connect more devices. Included in the kit is a setup CD and 1 year warranty.

Features:

Kit includes 2 XAV5001 AV 500 Adapters for immediate network setup

Belkin Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit

The Belkin Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit is a powerline adaptor released in 2009 as a flagship unit. At the time, Powerline technology was limited to 200Mpbs. But the HD Start Kit blew away the masses by introducing speeds as high as 1000Mbps for creating ultra-fast home networks based on the home’s electrical wiring. Critics note however that the supposed 1000Mbps speed is for ideal conditions, assuming no network traffic or interference, not to mention problematic wiring. Once configured, however, Belkin promises that the device can be used for transmitting high-bandwidth files and streams from one home computer to another. Additional features include government-grade 128-bit AES link encryption, and two Gigabit adaptors—one for a console or computer, and the other for a router.

Features

Featured are two 10/100Mbps adaptors—one which transmits from the router to the electrical system, and the other which receives from the electrical system and then transmits to a PC or whatnot. Unfortunately, the kit doesn’t have a pass-through power socket. This in turn means users lose access to two plugs while the devices are in operation. Included also is a button for setting up 128-bit AES encryption, a potential throughput of approximately 200Mbps (hardly ever achieved), and a constant continuous connection.

Netgear XAVB5501

Having outdistanced its predecessors (ex. the XAVB101, XETB1001) with a more than doubled connection speed, the only peer to Netgear's XAVB5501 AV+ 500 Adapter Kit would be the XAVB5001. Both belong to the same line of Powerline products, and both work the same way. By plugging in and connecting one adapter to an internet router, and plugging in and connecting the second adapter to any Ethernet-enabled device via the Gigabit Ethernet port, the existing electrical lines of a house are used to create a high-speed Ethernet network. Any device on the network is capable of sharing internet, storage, documents, games, and even streaming HD video at a speed of 500 mbps. A Push-and-Secure feature enables network security with the push of a button, while a Pick-A-Plug display automatically tests connections to ensure high performance. The one advantage of the XAVB5501 over the XAVB5001, however, is the filtered pass-through power outlet on the front that replaces the outlets the adapter may obstruct while it's plugged in. Besides the two adapters, the kit includes two Ethernet cables, a setup CD and a 1 year warranty.

Features:

Kit includes 2 AV+ 500 Adapters for immediate network setup

Ethernet network capable of sharing internet, storage, documents, games or streaming HD video

Push-and-Secure sets up network security at the push of a button

Pick-A-Plug automatically tests connection to optimize performance

Each adapter features a fltered pass-through power outlet on the front

LEDs indicate status and automatically power down when not in use

Networking Feature: Bridge

Connection speed: 500 mbps

Network Connectivity Technology: Wired

Supports Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Home Plug AV (HPAV)

Compatible with over 90% of standard home outlets

Includes setup CD, support and information card, and warranty card

1 year warranty

Dimensions (per adapter): 5.43" (W) x 2.56" (D) x 1.57" (H)

Linksys PLK300

The idea behind the Linksys PLK300 Powerline AV Network Adapter Kit is that it's an instant home network in a box. It's also an improvement, doubling the speed of its predecessor (the PLK200) from 100 mbps to 200 mbps while keeping 128-bit AES encryption for security. The kit includes a single port adapter (the PLE300), which is connected to a router or the hub of an existing network. The other four port adapter included in the kit (the PLS300) plugs into an ordinary power outlet and can connect to up to four Ethernet-equipped devices (such as computers, TiVos, or digital media adapters) which then become part of the LAN network and can share HD videos, photos, documents, networked games, printers, and internet. By converting the existing powerlines of a house into high-speed connections, Linksys offers an alternative to the costly installation of a brand new network of Ethernet lines. If necessary, additional adapters (PLE300) can be purchased separately to add more devices to the network. The Linksys PLK300 includes a CD-ROM with instructions for setup, a 1 year limited warranty and free technical support.

Features:

The Linksys EFSP42 is a standard, competent network device with 256kb of printer RAM, 512kb of internal memory for future updates, and the capability to function as both a print server and network hub through 2 Parallel Printer ports and 4 Ethernet ports. The 2 Parallel Printer ports are capable of supporting multiple print jobs from multiple computers in a network and sending them to the shared printers, while Bi-Directional capability allows the printers to send feedback back to the computers through the same network. While this technology has experienced a drop in popularity, there the EFSP42 sees additional usefulness as a device to unite both older printers and newer ones on the same network. As a hub, it also allows users to create a home or work network between multiple computers. Because it has been noted to experience difficulties when processing print jobs of large sizes, the EFSP42 is recommended for a small home or office network with standard printing demands. Purchase of the Linksys EFSP42 includes a 3 Year Limited Warranty.

Features:

Netgear XAVB1004

Even a concept as streamlined as the one behind Powerline technology (ie. convert a house's existing powerlines into high speed connections rather than installing Ethernet lines) can run into hiccups, with the notable one being that the size of most adapters obstructs any nearby outlets in addition to the one they're plugged into. Netgear's solution is in the XAVB1004 Home Theatre Internet Connection Kit, which combines four Ethernet ports into a hub-style device that sits free of the wall. Also included is a Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter, and the two work in tandem to create a high speed Ethernet network. First, the adapter is plugged into a router. Then the hub, as its name suggests, is installed in the entertainment room, where it offers four ports for Ethernet-enabled devices (HDTVs, TiVos, game consoles, Blu-Ray,etc.) to connect to the Ethernet network to share internet, games, storage, HD videos and more at a speed of 200 mbps. 128-bit AES security encryption ensures the safety of the network and can be setup with the press of a button while a Pick-A-Plug display tests connections automatically for high performance. The XAVB1004 Kit includes 2 Ethernet cables, a Setup CD, and a 1 year warranty.

Features:

It converts any standard power outlet into an ethernet port using the Home Plug AV standard. It can be used on an existing Home Plug network, or two of them can be used to create a powerline network from an existing ethernet gateway or router. Installation of the device just requires plugging the power into the wall and the ethernet into any ethernet-ready device. If a home plug network is not already in existence, a second adapter will be required to go from a router or gateway to the power lines. The Actiontec HLE20003-01P uses a more recent revision of Home Plug, and therefore supports speeds up to 200 Mbps.

This method of power-line networking saves consumers the need for rewiring network cords and adapters throughout an entire house and makes the process that much more simple. The HLE08500-01K model power-line adapter is a step down from Actiontec's next-gen powerline adapter series and only supports speeds up to 85Mbps, this is still fast enough however to support high bandwidth applications such as high speed gaming or media streaming. The HLE08500-01K model network adapter is fully compatible with any gaming console, modern router or internet gateway.

The Actiontec HLE08500-01K model power-line adapter includes additional features such as easy installation (plug and play) support, Homeplug 1.0 certification support, 56-bit DES data encryption security support, and comes bundled with 2 adapters total.

It is worth noting that Actiontec's HLE20003-01KP Next-Gen Power-line network adapters can be had for about the same price and support speeds of up to 200Mpbs.

Linksys PLK200

The Linksys PLK200 is a Powerline AV Network Adapter Kit that is, essentially, two Linksys PLE200 Powerline AV Network Adapters packaged together. Each adapter, when plugged into an ordinary electrical outlet and an Ethernet-equipped device, converts the existing powerlines of a building into high speed network connections. A minimum of two adapters creates a LAN network with a speed of 100 mbps and 128-bit AES security encryption, enabling multiple devices (such as computers, TiVos, or digital media adapters) to share HD videos, documents, networked games, or printers. When a router is added to the network, internet also becomes a shared resource. Additional adapters can be added to a maximum of 256, but for most small home or office networks, one adapter per device will add up to a smaller cost than installing a network of Ethernet lines. A CD-ROM is included for step-by-step installation and configuring security, along with a 1 year warranty and free technical support.

Features:

Networking Feature: Bridge

Operating System Required: Windows 2000/XP

Netgear XAV2001

Like its peer from another manufacturer (the Linksys PLE300), Netgear's XAV2001 Powerline AV 200 Adapter aims to solve the problem of creating an ethernet network while minimizing the cost of ethernet lines. In this case, all it takes is two adapters to plug into a home's existing powerlines to set up a highspeed network capable of transferring data at 200 mbps. One adapter is plugged into an outlet and a router; the other can be plugged in anywhere in the house and offers a single Ethernet port for any Ethernet-enabled device to be plugged into. With more adapters, more devices (such as Blu-Ray, HDTVs, gaming consoles, computers or laptops) become part of the network and can share printers, documents, storage, movies, games, or streaming HD video. A button at the side of every XAV2001 offers easy setup of AES 128-bit security encryption. Unlike its predecessors (the Netgear XAV101 or XET1001), it offers compatibility with Mac OS X as well as Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Included in the package are a 1 year warranty, Ethernet cable, and Setup CD.

Features:

Creates a network capable of sharing HD video, VoIP, photos, documents, networked games and storage

Networking Feature: Bridge

Connection speed: 200 mbps

Network Connectivity Technology: Wired

Power Required: AC 120 V

Supports Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and HomePlug AV (HPAV)

128-bit AES security encryption offers easy setup with one button

Plugs into standard HomePlug AV outlet

It’s composed of two pieces—an HD MediaBridge Coax adapter that functions as an Ethernet-to-coaxial bridge (Coax F-type connector and RJ-45 included) and another one that functions as a coaxial-to-Ethernet bridge. With the system users can quickly transmit high-definition multimedia files from one computer to another without having to purchase a ridiculously long Ethernet cable. One drawback to the DXN-221 is that it’s not compatible with Satellite TV, as it requires a separate coaxial wiring system of its own.

Features

Coaxial-Based Powerline Starter Kit

As a step up from the original DHP-300, the DHP-301 provides two adapters—the remote PLC and the local ETH. This allows it to transmit from a local router to a remotely based PC somewhere within a 300-meter distance, and of course still within the house, as the connectivity will be based on the home’s internal wiring. It offers a theoretical speed of 200Mbps, assuming no traffic interference. However, critics have revealed that the speed tends to range somewhere between a Wireless n router and a Wireless g router.

It is Actiontec's older ethernet adapter, as it uses an older version of the HomePlug AV standard and can only provide 85mbps networking speeds, instead of 200mbps. It is compatible with all routers and gateways, and can be used to either create a Home Plug powerline network from an existing ethernet netowrk, or as a means of expanding an existing Home Plug network. Due to the lower speed and relative ease of installtion, the Actiontec HLE08500-01 is most popular as a way to connect game consoles to a network, rather than computers.

Features

Linksys PLE300

Besides a new aesthetic, the Linksys PLE300 differentiates from its predecessor, the PLE200, with a doubled connection speed of 200 mbps over 100 mbps and the ability to stream HD videos over the network it creates. The basic idea remains the same: eliminate the cost of installing a network of Ethernet lines by instead converting a home's existing powerlines into high speed network connections. When an Ethernet-enabled device (ex. PC, TiVo, digital media adapter) is connected to an ordinary outlet through the PLE300, it also becomes connected to a LAN network, enabling devices to share data, printers, games, storage, and--when paired with a router--internet. Quality of Service (QoS) has also been added to the 128-bit AES security encryption. A CD with step-by-step instructions to installation is included with the purchase of the PLE300, as well as a 1 year warranty.

Features:

Creates a network capable of sharing HD video, VoIP, photos, documents, networked games and storage

Networking Feature: Bridge

Operating System Required: Windows 2000/XP

Connection speed: 200 mbps

Network Connectivity Technology: Wired

Power Required: AC 120/230 V

Supports Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and HomePlug AV (HPAV)

128 bit security encryption with Quality of Service (QoS)

Plugs into standard AC outlet

Includes CD guide to installation and free technical support

Dimensions: 5.8" (W) x 4.1" (L) x 1.4" (H)

Netgear's MoCA Coax-Ethernet Adapter Kit (the MCAB1001) paralllels Powerline technology by converting existing wiring into high-speed Ethernet connections--but instead of using electrical wiring, it uses the coaxial cables used to deliver cable TV, making it the ideal product for someone looking to connect their home theatre to the internet. The kit includes everything needed to start a network; one adapter's Coax In connecter is plugged into a wall jack while its Ethernet port is connected to an Internet router. The other adapter can be set up where it's needed, enabling a TiVo, HDTV, receiver, Blu-Ray player or game console to plug into its Ethernet port and become part of the network, capable of sharing internet, games, storage, HD videos and more at 270 mbps. In the event that the adapter supplants your TV connection or simply blocks the coax jack, an extra Coax Out connector ensures you can reconnect the device. The MCAB1001 Kit features QoS (Quality of Service) and, besides the two MoCA Coax-EThernet adapters, includes two RG-6 Coax cables with F-type connectors, two Ethernet cables, two power adapters, a setup CD and a 1 year warranty.

Features:

Includes 2 Netgear MCA1001 Coax-Ethernet Adapters for immediate network setup

Ethernet network shares HD video, VoIP, photos, documents, networked games, storage and internet

Adapters each include 1 extra Coax Out connector

Networking Feature: Bridge

Netgear XAVB101

The Netgear XAVB101 is not so much a new product as a package deal--included are two Netgear XAV101 Ethernet Adapters, which is everything the average consumer needs to quickly set up an Ethernet network in their house. One of the adapters connects to a router connected to a broadband modem. The other can be plugged in anywhere in the house, and once any Ethernet-equipped devices (PCs, TiVos, gaming consoles) are connected through its Ethernet port, they become part of a network capable of sharing printers, internet, storage, documents, and even HD videos at a speed of 200 mbps. The devices also feature a button for easy setup of 128-bit AES security encryption of the network. Both adapters plug into ordinary HomePlug AV outlets, and by using the existing powerlines of a house as high speed Ethernet connections, the XAVB101 is a cheaper option than having brand new Ethernet lines installed. The kit includes a 1 year warranty, installation guide, setup CD, warranty card, and support and information card.

Features:

Like its peers of the same Powerline technology (ex. the Linksys PLE200 or PLE300), the Netgear XAV101 is marketed to offer consumers an alternative to the installation of new Ethernet lines for the sake of a home network--instead, how about converting the existing powerlines into high speed connections? With that concept in mind, the XAV101 is designed to connect between a power outlet and an Ethernet-equipped device, and whether it's a PC, TV, or game console, it then becomes part of the network, capable of sharing HD videos, games, photos, documents and internet over a 200 mbps connection. To keep connections secure, the XAV101 features a button to quickly set up the 128-bit AES encryption. Included in the package is a warranty card, support and information card, installation guide and setup CD. Note: a second XAV101 adapters is needed to complete the network by connecting to a router, but the XAVB101 kit, which includes two adapters, is also available for purchase.

The ZyXEL PLA402V2 is a powerline ethernet adapter that uses existing home power wiring. The device connects to the household power lines and, optionally, the coax cabling, and runs Ethernet standard communication through those wires providing a standard RJ-45 connection. Up to 200Mbps of bandwidth can run through the device, and the 10/100Mbps Ethernet standards are observed with MDI/MDIX. QoS standards, however, are not observed with this device so interference may decrease the available bandwidth. This device is compatible with all other HomePlug AV devices, allowing it to be used with a number of other ZyXEL powerline devices. Network security is provided using the 128-bit AES standard. A multi-colored LED display shows transmission rates over the network, as well as indicating that the power is on.

The D-Link DHP-303 is one of three powerline adapters (DHP-300, DHP-301, DHP-303) designed to move Ethernet data across power cables to any outlet in one’s home or office. As an evolutionary step up from previous models, the DHP-303 goes green—in that it adds along a power-saving mode that automatically reduces power usage when the network is idle. Like its peers, however, the device is restricted to one network port, which means a hub would be required for managing more devices. Other than that, the unit offers a speed of 200Mbps, assuming low network traffic. Additional features include support for Quality of Service data prioritization, and compatibility with any Ethernet device.
