RIM BlackBerry Bold 9000

The BlackBerry Bold (aka RIM BlackBerry 9000) is the latest smartphone (available August 21, 2008) from RIM to be released by AT&T on November 4th 2008, for $299 with a 2-year contract. Earlier retail estimates were expected to be around $300 - $400, but this latest release hints that it will probably be much higher. The Bold has high-speed data connectivity with support for 3G networks (quad-band EDGE and tri-band HSDPA) and WiFi (802.11 a/b/g). Other improvements over the BlackBerry Curve including a doubling of CPU speed to 624 MHz and a doubling of screen resolution to 480 x 320 resolution display (Half-VGA). The BlackBerry Bold is a competitor to the latest 3G version of the Apple iPhone announced on June 9th, 2008.

BlackBerry Tour 9630

The BlackBerry Tour 9630 is a high-end smartphone launching in July 2009 on Verizon and Sprint cellular networks in the US. Unlike its major competitors, the touch-screen Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS, the 9630 features a full physical keyboard below a 480 x 360 pixel display. It works worldwide on 3G networks, and features BlackBerry Maps and built-in GPS with turn-by-turn directions. GPS also allows geo-tagging for photos taken with the 3.2-megapixel camera. A microSD card slot enables expanded storage (beyond the 256 MB on-board) for music, video, and photos. Battery life is rated at 5 hours talk time.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 8320

RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8320 is a quad band smartphone similar to and released around the same time as the BlackBerry 8820. Its frame is slightly smaller than the 8820, but has the same size screen and the same QWERTY keypad and trackball configuration. The Curve 8320 offers typical BlackBerry features like Internet browsing, wireless email and email synchronization, and organizer. The 8320 has a media player and a 2.0-megapixel digital camera with LED flash, which is not available on the 8800 series models. The Curve 8320 includes 64MB on board memory with a microSD card slot for expansion, and is compatible with downloadable social networking site applications, such as flickr or Facebook.

The RIM BlackBerry Storm 9500 smartphone is the first BlackBerry to be compatible with the 3G wireless network and is one of the more premium BlackBerry models. Instead of a keypad, the 9500 uses a large 3.25"-diagonal touch screen to navigate. The screen auto-rotates based on position, and uses a full QWERTY layout with SureType to increase accuracy. The 9500 has a 3.2-megapixel digital camera with auto flash, auto focus and video recording. It comes with a built-in GPS receiver and BlackBerry Maps, and automatically geo-tags any photographs taken with their location. It still includes standard BlackBerry features, like wireless email synchronization, instant messaging, HTML browser and document editor. It is meant to compete with other emergent 3G smartphones, like the 3G iPhone.

RIM BlackBerry Storm

Released on November 21st, 2008, the BlackBerry Storm is RIM's first touch screen BlackBerry device. The Storm (previously thought to be called the BlackBerry Thunder) competes squarely with the Apple iPhone and the T-Mobile G1 (the first Google Android phone). It features a similarly sized 3.25" HVGA 480 x 360 single-touch display, with pop-up software keyboard that can be used in either full-width QWERTY landscape orientation or Suretype portrait orientation. It will be available through Vodafone in the UK and Australia, Verizon in the United States, and Telus or Bell in Canada. Verizon currently sells the Storm for $199 after $50 MIR, with a 2-year contract, to compete with the iPhone; unlocked Storms are available online for around $500.

RIM's BlackBerry 8820 is a quad band smartphone that builds upon the features of the 8700 series. It features a slightly more compact frame than previous BlackBerry models, and still tries to fill the role of a personal digital assistant/phone combination. The BlackBerry 7290 is a full-size BlackBerry handset and is the updated version of the BlackBerry 7280. The major differences are that the 7290 is quad band receptive and that it is Bluetooth enabled to allow wireless connections to headsets. The 7290 includes a web browser and email synchronization, and is compatible with several BlackBerry business email server options. It still features a 65k color screen, intuitive menu setup and trackwheel for easier navigation. The 7290 does not include BlackBerry Messenger service, though it does come with more internal memory than the 3280, with 32MB of flash storage.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 - otherwise known as the Bold 2 - is RIM's latest update to their original Bold model, appearing as a sort of hybrid of the BlackBerry Bold and Curve models. This phone is expected to be available through carriers worldwide in November 2009. New features include an upgraded vertical resolution to 480 x 360 (from 480 x 320), an optical trackpad instead of the typical BlackBerry trackball, an upgraded 3.2MP camera and the latest BlackBerry 5.0 operating system. As found on the original Bold, the Bold 2 will include 3G network compatibility and high-speed data transfer and web browsing, as well as Wi-Fi access and Wi-Fi calling. The phone allegedly comes pre-loaded with certain apps from BlackBerry appworld, including Amazon and a turn-by-turn GPS navigator. The Bold 2 supports personal and corporate email forwarding and has a visual voicemail function. Like most BlackBerry models, it has a full QWERTY keyboard and numerous organizer functions. Without a contract, the Bold 2 is expected to have a high price point.

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is the most basic of the Pearl series of smartphones, though they are all very similar. The 8100 is compact and resembles a typical candybar handset more than full-size BlackBerry units. It has a QWERTY keypad and trackball layout, though there are two letters per key, one on each side, instead of a dedicated key for each letter. It offers many of the standard BlackBerry features, such as Internet browsing, wireless email and account integration, media player, document viewer and instant messaging. It includes a 1.3-megapixel digital camera with LED flash as well. The Pearl 8100 falls in the spectrum of slightly more affordable smartphones, though it has a smaller screen and shorter battery life than most other BlackBerry models.

RIM's BlackBerry 8700 series is the updated line of full-size BlackBerry units after the 7200 series. They are smartphones, combinations of regular mobile phones and digital assistants. Most of the units in the series have the same basic specifications, with variations usually based on regional availability. The physical shape of the units resembles that of the older full-size BlackBerry units. The 8700 series still features a full backlit QWERTY keypad, thumb trackwheel, HTML Internet browser, email capabilities and Java 2.0. They feature Intel 312MHz processors with 16MB of RAM. The units come with 64MB of internal memory and are Bluetooth compatible. They allow for mp3 ringtones as well as multimedia messaging. All are capable of email synchronization. Aside from a few feature upgrades on some of the 8700 models, the main differences are what region they were released in.

RIM Blackberry Curve 8300

The Blackberry Curve (technical name: Blackberry 8300) is a more consumer friendly addition to the Blackberry lineup. A 2 megapixel camera with flash, extensive media (movies and audio) playback capabilities, and all the usual productivity features Blackberries are known for are all included in the Curve. Some people view the Curve as the multimedia version of the Blackberry 8800.

Similar to the 8800 the Curve features a 2.5" screen with a resolution of 320x240 which is comparable to media players such as the iPod Video. Also similar to the 8800, the Curve features a full QWERTY (that is: same button layout as a computer) keyboard. Other features include a microSD slot for more storage, and Bluetooth 2.0 support for stereo headsets. Menu navigation occurs with the now standard Blackberry trackball. Transferring movies, music and other files is done through the included software application which performs some movie conversion to get the proper format.

RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8110

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8110 smartphone is nearly identical to the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. All specifications are exactly the same, with three exceptions. The 8110 has a built-in GPS receiver, with service depending on regional network providers. GPS allows for direction and route determination and displays user location on the included BlackBerry Maps. The 8110 has the same 1.3-megapixel camera, but this version allows for video capture though the 8100 does not. The 8110 is also compatible with 3.5mm stereo headsets.

RIM BlackBerry Gemini 9300

The BlackBerry 9300 Gemini is a forthcoming next-generation smartphone from RIM. It is anticipated to be released some time in the first quarter of 2010. The Gemini will feature more or less the standard BlackBerry frame design, with full QWERTY keypad and a large screen. The screen is supposed to be higher resolution than the preceding line of BlackBerry units, the 8900. It is quad-band GSM receptive, and tri-band HSDPA receptive. It includes a digital camera, though resolution is uncertain at this point. It will also almost certainly include Wi-Fi connectivity and a GPS receiver. Though it is too early to give pricing information for the Gemini 9300, it is expected to be a high-end BlackBerry model, competitive with other 3G smartphones.

The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 is Research In Motion's first ever flip phone. The Pearl Flip was released in the United States on October 13th, 2008 over the T-Mobile network and in Canada on November 4th, 2008 over the Rogers Network; it retails for $50 in both countries with a 3-year voice and data plan. The Flip Pearl features two high-resolution, light sensitive LCD displays; a larger 240 x 320 internal display for browsing the web, and a smaller external display to view incoming calls when the device is closed. The BlackBerry 7280 is a full-size tri-band BlackBerry handset and features the standard BlackBerry shape and backlit full QWERTY keyboard. It has a 65k color screen and side-mounted trackwheel for navigation. It has a large screen with large icons and intuitive menu. The 7280 is capable of wireless Internet browsing, email and email account synchronization, and is BlackBerry Messenger compatible to communicate with other BlackBerry users. It also connects to BlackBerry Internet Service Instant messaging to communicate with non-BlackBerry devices. The 7280 does not support Bluetooth wireless technology.

RIM has released its latest in the Blackberry family, the Blackberry 8800. Improving on the Pearl, the 8800 features a full QWERTY keyboard, a 320x240 screen, and is slightly thinner. Rounding out the features include the trackball navigation system, GPS /w maps, multimedia, expandable microSD, and voice activated dialing (VAD). All of this is bundled along with the features you've come to expect from a Blackberry: browser, text-messaging, and, of course, mobile phone services. The 8800 will cost you approximately $300 with a 2 year contract.

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8120 smartphone is nearly identical to the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. One difference between the two is that the 8120 is enabled for Wi-Fi use over the 802.11b/g network. Another upgrade is that the 8120 is capable of video capture and the camera resolution has been increased to 2.0-megapixels from 1.3. The 8120 is also compatible with 3.5mm stereo headsets. It also has slightly longer battery life than the other Pearl models and comes with a travel charger. The 8120 does not feature a GPS receiver, like the similar 8110.

The BlackBerry 7100t is the first in the 7100 series of wireless handsets, and more compact than earlier BlackBerry handsets. It is one of the first Blackberry models to include a color screen, and like previous units is meant to combine phone service with data transfer and email. As such, it features a compact QWERTY-layout keypad, as well as a side trackwheel and escape key for navigation. It also links to a personal or corporate email account. Another BlackBerry first is the inclusion of Bluetooth support, meant primarily for wireless headset use.
