Nvidia GeForce 9400GT

Launched late in August 2008, the GeForce 9400GT is the long awaited budget model based on the 9th generation of Nvidia's GeForce graphics card design. With an MSRP of $59 and years ahead of competing onboard video from the likes of Intel, the 9400GT is nothing to skoff at. Designed to display desktop resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 and makes viewing high definition content a breeze, the 9400GT can also handle light gaming on lower resolutions. While the 9400GT does offer new levels of graphics and media processing power at a new low in terms of pricing, the technology is far from bleeding edge. With the 10th generation of Nvidia cards now months into mainstream use, the 9400GT is in simply an overclocked previous generation 8500GT.

Features

GPU: 55nm process, G96/D9M at 550 MHz, 16 Stream Processors

Memory: 256, 512 or 1024MB of 800MHz DDR2 or 256MB of 1600MHz DDR3, through 128bit interface, 12.8 GB/s

DirectX 10, Shader Model 4.0, OpenGL 2.1 compatible

XFX PVT88PYDF4 GeForce 8800GT

The GeForce 8800GT is a video card that is gathering a large amount of support from the enthusiast press, and enthusiastic gamers. People are buzzing about the 8800GT because it competes with the high-end offerings by NVidia and AMD on performance while falling in mid-range pricing, costing up to half of the high-end parts. The 8800GT is meant to fall between the 8800GTS and GTX processors, but benchmarks show the GT often outperforming the GTS and matching the GTX. Similar to the GTS, NVidia include a dedicated video processing chip to handle media encoding/decoding, offloading those calculations from the CPU. The 65nm process makes for a cooler running card allowing a slim cooling solution that takes only one slot, instead of the two that the higher-end cards use. XFX's offering of the 8800GT comes bundled with a free copy of Company of Heroes, a lifetime warranty, and uses NVidia's reference cooling design of a slimline fan.

The Chip

The 8800GT is built off the code name G92 architecture, which is a derivative of the G80 architecture that provides the foundation for the 8800GTS/GTX systems. The main changes made to the G92 are the 65nm production process, and rolling in the display, and video processing chips directly into the GPU. The number of transistors has increased from 681 million to 754 million. Despite the larger number of transistors, the G92 chip is almost half the size of the G80 and consumes significantly less power, due to the 65nm technology.

Differences with GTS and GTX

The 8800GT features less texture and stream processing capabilities than its more expensive brethren. The GT also has a narrower memory bus between the GPU and the video RAM, however actual memory bandwidth is only 10% less than that found on the GTS due to the higher clockspeed found on the GT. In real world applications the smaller bandwidth becomes an issue when running at resolutions near 1080p and above, with anti-aliasing active.

Built originally on a 65nm process, the 9800 GTX went to a 55nm process in July 2008 (hence GTX+), allowing Nvidia to make the card faster and cooler at the same time. Containing a fairly large GPU the 9800 GTX contains 754 million transistors. Introduced at 349 dollars, the 9800 GTX has seen a great deal of competition from superior offerings, both from the Nvidia camp (with the newer GTX 260/280) as well as from AMD/ATI, with their new inexpensive offerings such as the Radeon 4850/4870 and more recently 4850x2/4870x2. Today a 9800 GTX card can be had for just over $200.

The G96 retains its 32 shader processors, 8 ROPs, and 16 TMUs. The G96 is manufactured using 65 nanometer (nm) technology, and allows for cheaper mass production than the 80 nanometer G84 graphics processor. As a result of the die shrink, power consumption and heat output were reduced, and the scalability (for the most part) increased.

The 9500 GT is DirectX 10 compliant and is offered as a "budget mainstream" graphics card, offering decent performance for its intended audience. The 32 shader processors are CUDA complient and as such makes the 9500 GT suitable for many forms of "GPGPU" computing. G96 also offers onboard PureVideo HD video decoding and can offload 100% of H.264 video decoding from the CPU, resulting in reduced power consumption. Though not standard on all 9500 GT models, the G96 supports native HDMI and Display Port interfaces and is HDCP compliant.

Some of these cards are overclocked from the stock settings of 650MHz/1800MHz. Two cards that stand apart from the rest are the Silent and Top models, the Silent for it's ability to passively cool a relatively powerful and hot GPU and the Top for it's impressive 720MHz/2000MHz overclock. Asus should also be applauded for it's Matrix hybrid option, and their attempt to compete with MSI while bringing the gift of silence during 2D operation to the attention of consumers. For more information on the 9600 GT refer to the full report.
