The Amazon Kindle is a wireless eBook reader that allows you to download and read books, newspapers and notable blogs on-the-go. It does not require you to first have the book downloaded on your computer, but instead allows you to buy books directly from the Kindle online store and the book gets downloaded directly to the device in approximately 1 minute. The device does not use WiFi for its internet connection, instead using the cell phone high-speed data network, EVDO. A major bonus is that you don't pay for the wireless access, this is covered by a deal with Amazon and Sprint and accounts for the somewhat inflated Kindle price, although without an additional monthly bill this gets more acceptable.

The Kindle offers two ways to read popular online newspapers (like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post), monthly magazines (like Forbes and Time) and notable blogs (like the Huffington Post, BoingBoing and Slashdot). You can pay a monthly subscription fee and Kindle automatically downloads the full text of the journal or blog without any user intervention for later offline reading. Or you can use the Kindle's built-in web browser to access any web site or blog for free over Sprint's EVDO network. The browser, though limited to black and white, displays images and supports javascript.

You can also put e-books and other documents of your own on the Kindle. Files can be transferred from a computer directly using an included USB cable or by copying them onto an SD memory card. Kindle can read plain text files but documents in the Microsoft Word, HTML or PDF formats need to be converted. You can convert them yourself for free with the Mobipocket Creator program or you can email a file to Amazon and have them convert it. They will email the file back in a Kindle-compatible format. Amazon originally said it would charge 10 cents for sending a converted file directly to a Kindle via the wireless connection, but it is not doing so. There is no charge for sending a converted file back to your computer. There is one important limitation. The Kindle cannot read, and Amazon will not convert, e-books locked up with any digital rights management format other than the Kindle's. So you cannot read an e-book bought locked with Sony's or Microsoft's DRM.

The Screen

Aside from the added features of the Kindle, the major improvement to the eReader industry in general is the Kindle's screen. Amazon used a patented technology called electronic paper, which provides a clear black and white display for easy reading using actual ink. The ink particles are displayed electronically, but don't require a backlight, thus you read the Kindle as you would any other book - with a good source of light by your side. This has obvious benefits such as no glare and the ability to read outside, a major complaint with past eReaders.

The Black & Decker InfraWave claims to cook up to 50% faster with no pre-heating. It uses infrared radiation to cook the food, allowing for faster cooking times more similar to microwaves than ovens. It has a capacity of 0.7 cu. ft, a digital touch pad, a digital display and a slide out crumb tray. The especially unique aspects of the InfraWave are its ability to 'know' how to cook your food based on the settings you choose.

Input what you're cooking (potatoes, lasagna, chicken, etc.) and the InfraWave oven sets the cook time and temperature. You can even set the oven to alert you at different cook times, depending on style you want. For instance, you can choose 'regular' and 'crispy' and then the oven will alert you when the cook time is done for regular and alert you again when the cook time is done for crispy. There are a variety of preset options available as well so you're not clamoring for the ideal choice.

The InfraWave works by using infrared technology and changes wavelengths depending on what you're cooking. The oven is not a microwave since it uses the higher-energy infrared radiation rather than microwave radiation. The use of infrared makes it a closer cousin to the conventional convection oven.

The BodyBugg is a simple device that you wear on your person at all times that monitors the amount of calorie burning you do throughout the day. By measuring your overall movements and intensity levels, bodybugg claims to register over 92% of all your calories used. Guitar Hero II costs about $80 for the single player bundle that includes the game and one guitar controller.

Gameplay

Guitar Hero II successfully mimics the experience playing a real guitar. Your goal is to press combinations of any one (or more in the case of chords) of the five fret buttons while simultaneously flicking the strum bar. This action must be timed and sequence accurately to the song that you are playing. You are graded on how close you match the song's rhythm and notes. There is also a whammy bar that you can use to gain bonus points in a long sustain (or just to show off). The gameplay includes other more advanced techniques including three-button chords, hammer-ons, and pull-offs. New to Guitar II is the ability to flip the controls so that you can play lefty like Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Cobain.

The game includes many songs (see the complete track listing) belonging to any one of four difficulty levels. Songs can be played in single player or multi-player modes. In the case of multi-player, you have a further choice of battling head-to-head or playing in co-operative mode wherein one player plays lead and the other takes rhythm.

There is a single player career mode where you play as lead guitarist in a band that is scheduled for eight gigs at different venues. You must play a set of three or four songs (depends on difficulty setting) at each venue (plus encores) to make it to the next gig. Along the way, you earn money that can be put towards upgrades of guitars, guitar finishes, your fashion sense, characters, bonus songs, and videos.

Differences between the PS2 and Xbox 360 versions

The Xbox 360 version was released several months later, and, therefore, includes all of the features and of the PS2 with some notable improvements. Also, the included guitar has changed from an SG Controller based off of a Gibson SG Standard to the X-Plorer controller reminiscent of the Gibson Explorer.

The VPX121X has an MSRP of $180, but is typically sold for around $110. The Slacker is a new portable music player that was originally slated to be released in the summer of 2007 but has been delayed until the end of January. The Slacker is a portable internet radio player that the company claims will rival the iPod. While many players have made this claim (see Microsoft Zune), the Slacker takes a new approach by trying to change the game. Instead of downloading, a song is streamed directly to this player from a choice of around 100 customizable Internet radio stations. The listener decides, on a song-by-song basis, whether or not they "Love It" or to "Ban It". These choices help determine what future songs will be streamed to you.

The fundamental concept driving this player is simplicity. With the Slacker, there isn't any software requirements for synching or a connection to a computer at all for that matter. Content is delivered over the Slacker's WiFi connection designed to pick up on nearby wireless networks or connect via satellite with an optional kit. It features a large 4" color LCD screen for displaying album art, artist information and visualizations as you listen. Control of the player is done by pressing buttons mounted on the side of the player, as it does not have a touch screen.

Note: It is speculated that (1) the player is able to sync with your computer in much the same way as the iPod does with iTunes (supported by a visible USB input), and (2) The Slacker can play cached streams without the presence of a WiFi signal.

Subscription options

There are two subscription choices available to the listener:

1) free: stream all the music you like for free while being subjected to an ever-changing banner ad on the LCD screen

2) $7.50 / month: same as free, but the banner ad disappears, and you are able to keep any number of songs for as long as you like on the built-in memory.

There is also a freely available web-based player on their website that draws upon the same Internet radio stations, but doesn't require any other hardware or software.

There have been conflicting reviews on the weight balance of the Root 6 and its easy-of-use.

Musicophilia is neurologist Oliver Sacks' latest book delving into "different brained" people. The book focuses on music and its impact on people afflicted with different reactions to music. One patient is a man who after being struck by lightening, is suddenly inspired to become a concert pianist. Sacks also examines a group of children with Williams Syndrome who have an extreme love of music right from birth. As a contrast, he examines a group of people with amusia - they hear a symphony as if it's just pots and pans banging away. He also examines an especially intriguing patient who has no short term memory and can't remember anything that happened more than 7 seconds ago, except when it comes to music, which he can remember thoroughly.
