Nokia N9

The N9 is a medium to high end smartphone from Nokia, running the open-source, Linux-based MeeGo operating system. MeeGo is a joint development effort between Nokia and Intel, though Nokia has substantially reduced its commitment to the platform after the announcement of the partnership with Microsoft and its Windows Phone software. Lacking staunch support from its own manufacturer, it is likely that application development for the N9 will lack substantially. However, the N9 convinces with a few innovations. For instance, it has a buttonless design (apart from volume and shutter), and instead wholly relies on swipe gestures that switch between a graphical task manager, a notifications view, and the app launcher. This makes it extremely easy to navigate to the most accessed features, even with just one finger. Reviews also applaud the extremely smooth, speedy, and polished user interface implementation, as well as Nokia's excellent maps and offline GPS navigation at no extra cost. Other highlights are a Gorilla Glass protected AMOLED screen, a high-quality 8MP camera with LED flash & Carl Zeiss optics and shutter speed beating point-and-shoot cameras, HD video recording, unibody design, up to 64GB internal storage, WebKit/HTML5 web browser, and NFC (like Google's Nexus S). Whilst the N9's OMAP3630 processor and PowerVR SGX530 GPU might not be up to smartphone enthusiasts' standards, Nokia has a tradition of highly optimised mobile software; meaning the MeeGo 1.2 operating system and applications will have no trouble running on the N9's somewhat dated hardware.

In contrast to many other navigation solutions, this package offers free voice-guidance, free map updates, and global map availability.
Nokia N810

The N810 is an updated version of the N800, part of Nokia's line of Internet tablets. Nokia markets their Internet tablets as high functioning PDAs that sit somewhere between high-end smart phones and value priced laptops. With the N810's introduction of a full QWERTY keyboard the device comes even closer to the world of laptops. The N810 retains the same size and resolution touch screen with lower power consumption and higher brightness. The other big change the N810 sees over its predecessor is the inclusion of an integrated GPS system with maps built in.

Main Specs

4.13 inch screen at a resolution of 800x480, displaying 65K colors

Processor: 400MHz

Internal RAM: 128 MB

2GB internal storage, expandable with miniSD cards (maximum 8GB)

WiFi: 802. 11b/g

Blutooth 2.0

USB 2.0

Frontal facing camera for video conferencing

Battery life: 4 hours video/wifi, 10 hours just music, 2 weeks idle

Running off of a full fledged Linux operating system and giving full access to developers has inspired a cult following of hackers that develop new applications to enhance the device. A suite of software comes prepackaged including a Mozilla based browser with full Flash 9 support, mail applications, and a media player supporting more formats than most dedicated media devices.

Comparisons with the iPhone are natural, however the N-series of tablets don't feature any cell phone capabilities. Instead Nokia encourages users to use the built in Skype software, or GTalk, to handle calls through Voice Over IP, requiring the existence of a WiFi connection.

Nokia N800

The N800 is an internet tablet designed for quick and easy access to the internet anywhere a wireless LAN is present, or through a mobile phone with help of a bluetooth connection. It sports the newest version of Opera's mobile browser (for OS2007) or Mozilla MicroB (for OS2008), as well as a built in web-camera for video conferencing. It also has an RSS reader, e-mail application, media player and Voice over IP capabilities. Though these features are the main focus of the product and the marketing of it, users who are willing to dive into the community of user-created applications will find uses never intended by Nokia. The N800 Operating System is Maemo OS2007, based on Debian Linux, making it possible for anyone to code applications for the product. Only a few months old there is already a large number of applications available for it, more being released almost daily.

Main Specs

Processor: 320MHz (400MHz after upgrade to OS2008)

Internal RAM: 128 MB

Other Memory: Two full-size SD card slots, one internal, one external. Officially supports SD, miniSD and microSD cards up to 8 GB, reported to work fine with 32 GB cards. Ships with a 256 MB mini SD card.

WiFi: 802. 11b/g

Bluetooth 2.0

USB 2.0 OTG (works both as master and as slave)

PowerVR MBX graphics accelerator (but functionality is limited, possibly because of licensing restrictions)

Other notes

The Nokia brand name may make you believe this is a mobile phone, but it is not. It does not support calling or texting on the GSM network, through you can use bluetooth and connect to a mobile phone to use it's 3G internet connection. The size factor may make you believe this is a PDA, but again this is not really what it is. It does not come supplied with PDA/PIM software, though you can download this for free yourself. This really is a Linux-based UMPC, but much smaller than most other UMPC's.

The camera is of poor quality due to the fact that it is intended for video conferencing and streaming video effectively over the internet. Image quality is sacrificed for the benefit of refresh rate. The N800 does not ship with a camera application, though Nokia has newly released an official downloadable application for taking pictures and recording video.

Though it is not advertised, the N800 has a FM chip first discovered by a user. Nokia has since released an application utilizing this chip.

The battery life is about 10 days in standby mode, and otherwise varies along with use. It has options to save battery by having it in offline mode, as well as a choice between nine different, easy to access, levels of screen lighting.

Compare to the more compact Nokia N95 as part of Nokia's N series of mobile devies. Succeeded by the Nokia N810.
