Radio design in the last 10 years has taken a major backseat to the ubiquitous digital formats like mp3 and video. This is what makes this design by René Adda so appealing. It's a radio that actually looks like it was made in this century.

The simple and elegant form have all the necessary ingredients for a radio: analog knob tuner, electronic volume control, front speaker and telescopic antenna. The radio's material comes in 2 different types either catering to the traditional (wood) or the eclectic (rubber). There is an AM/FM LED indicator at the front: AM is red, FM is green.

The radio was designed in 2004 for Lexon in France. It was featured on the cover of NewsWeek in July, 2005 as an example of exceptional design.

Archos 35 Home Connect

Archos' 35 Home Connect is a radio system with integrated touchscreen and processing, making it a compact boom box with a media player, browser, and app capabilities built in. It includes the TuneIn radio app, which allows access to over fifty thousand web radio stations. A proprietary "alarm clock" app can set off multiple alarms and also provides weather and traffic updates. The front of the unit has a camera, so video calling is also possible when on a Wi-Fi network. The Home Connect has 4GB of internal storage, though this can be expanded with SD cards up to a total of 20GB (with 16GB card). It plays FLAC, OGG, WAV and MP3 files, as well as most common video formats. Playback can be fed through the integrated speakers or a 3.5mm headphone jack. Since this radio is compatible with most Android apps, it can also be used for games or other utilities. Portability is another main feature, since the Home Connect uses a rechargeable battery pack.

Sony XDR-S16DBP

The XDR-S16DBP portable digital radio by Sony is styled in a retro design, with a rounded, natural wooden cabinet and uncluttered, simple black knob controls. It's compatible with FM radio, as well as being one of the first two Sony micro radios compatible with DAB and enhanced DAB+ digital broadcasting standards. Regularly available across Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and some parts of Asia, these broadcasting systems use a more efficient coding scheme. Through the use of noise and multipath fading, reception quality is consistent throughout signal reception, whereas FM reception degrades slowly as the signal decreases. DAB+ also allows access to a wider range of radio stations, as well as interference-free digital reception. This, coupled with 0.8W+0.8W speakers, allows this radio to reproduce a clear stereo sound. A sleep timer allows a preset time delay before the radio automatically switches off to save power and a headphone jack offers private listening.

The Philips AE2330/37 is a bathroom radio for use in the shower. The waterproof design uses anti-slip materials and textured sides to allow it to be easily handled with wet hands, reducing the chances of accidental drops. The timer can be adjusted, allowing customization of the time the radio waits before turning itself off automatically. A clock is built into the front with large numbers, and the LCD display will also indicate when the battery is getting low. The detachable strap allows for secure fastening of the radio to a variety of places in the shower area, and the battery operation allows it to be carried anywhere.

Insignia NS-HD02

The Insignia NS-HD02 is a mid-range portable HD radio that is the successor to the Insignia NS-HD01. The HD02 sports a number of improvements over the HD01, namely: a 2.5 x 3-inch capacitive touchscreen, a Live Pause function, Artist Experience song information and Bookmarks. Otherwise, the two portable radios sport the same features, including HD and FM radio receiving, a headphone/aux jack and a lithium-ion battery.

The NS-HD02's capacitive touchscreen provides a simple and intuitive way to navigate menus wile also providing full-colour image display with the NS-HD02's Artist Experience feature which displays images and ads related to the music currently playing. Its Live pause function allows users to pause any radio station playing on the NS-HD02 for a full 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the NS-HD02 offers CD-quality HD radio playback as well as standard-quality FM.

Lexon Tykho Radio

The Tykho Radio is a great example of functionality and form working harmoniously for a truly useful product, reminiscent of the Dolmen Radio, another design favorite. The radio is waterproof, allowing you to use it in the shower, by the pool or on the beach. The radio is encased entirely in a silicon rubber shell with the buttons, the antennae and even the speaker all using the same material. The antennae doubles as the station tuner with a rotating action for frequency search.

In March, 2000 Time Magazine featured an article on the front page entitled, "The Rebirth of Design". The Lexon Tykho radio was the chosen product for the spot, making it an iconic choice before its time. It's featured in MOMA's permanent collection in New York and has received numerous awards. It was designed by Marc Berthier, a designer and architect, who has been working with Lexon for over 10 years creating home objects with an interesting choice of materials and aesthetics.

The Eton E1XM is a full-featured AM/FM/SW/XM radio replacement for the Grundig Satellit 800. Designed to resemble the Satellit 650, the E1XM is described as a “bold and fresh new contender in the World Band portable radio market.” In fact, the Eton E1XM is the first portable radio to combine AM, FM, SW, and XM into one module. In addition, whereas the Grundig models were large and heavy, the E1XM is lap-size portable and measures approximately 13”x7.5”x3”.
