random commented on IKEA Malm bed

January 25, 2009 at 10:21 am

"I have the IKEA Malm bed in black/brown and we use a sleep number bed with a foundation (basically a box spring). In addition to the bed, you need to also buy a $10 midbeam. Although cheap, it is essential!

With a box spring and mattress, you don't have much of a headboard - maybe 4 or 5 inches from the higher setup and 8 or 9 inches from the lower one. With the setup, you have to pay incredibly close attention to the instructions. There are little things, that are easy to miss (such as putting small screws and plastic washers that go into two of about a dozen holes on a part) and end up making the difference between sleeping well and crashing to the floor due to missing part of a step.

My wife and I purchased the malm bed frame for about $200 and opted for cheaper nightstands (rather than their $200 nightstands that run the width of the bed. If I could go back and do it again, I would buy the malm nightstands and use a normal, $30 metal bed frame with the mattress and box spring"
