"krazyfiend I have decided, after trying different hdmi audio combinations, there is no need to force the codec selection. With the hdmi set to automatic, the optimum codec is in fact automatically selected. As for the video display, the only time I have forced 1080P is for the video game Call of Duty 4 which plays more

"I bought the PS3 in 2006 based on the inclusion of the Blu-ray player. At the time a separate Blu-ray player was about $800. Luck was with me, given the demise of HD-DVD and the timely PS3 firmware updates. I believe Sony is able to market the STR-DG720 at the low price point in part because more

"I had considered the Onkyo 605 or 705 until I found out about the PS3 firmware update. I was amazed at the $299.00 price. My equipment includes the 60GB PS3 and a Sharp 32" 1080P LCD TV."

"Very good value. I replaced a STR-DG800 7.1 HDMI passthrough receiver with this unit. It's a good buy for PS3 owner's. While it doesn't decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio ,it doesn't matter since the PS3 decodes both and sends the LPCM to the receiver. Yeah, you're one of the lucky ones :). If you were one of the HD-DVD adopters, it's not worth much more than the plastic, metal, and rubber that it's made of.

I didn't notice that the Onkyos were only HDMI 1.2a...updating the wiki now.

I was surprised by the price, too. Especially, when you compare the DG720 to what's out there. You have to go up to the Onkyo TX-SR576 @ $400+ or the Yamaha RX-V663 @ $550. It also makes the PS3 more compelling (maybe that's Sony's plan), when you realize that you can save some money on your receiver by dropping HD-audio decoding support in favour of raw 7.1 audio processing.

I had considered the Onkyo 605 or 705 until I found out about the PS3 firmware update. I was amazed at the $299.00 price. My equipment includes the 60GB PS3 and a Sharp 32" 1080P LCD TV.
