Tascam US-144

The Tascam US-144 is a complete portable recording solution: a USB 2.0 Audio/Midi interface for your PC or Mac based computer. Designed for use in a portable setting hooked up to a laptop. Includes Cubase LE recording software making this a fully functioning zero latency recording solution out of the box at a great price. Equipped with a bank of IO including two XLR phantom power mic inputs, two analog inputs (with selectable high impedance for guitars), a midi in, a midi out, a headphone jack, and S/PDIF Digital IO. See the Tascam US-122L for the 2 channel version of this interface.

Windows Vista Driver Support

Up until very recently, there has been no working drivers available for this device to be recognized and work in Windows Vista. This caused much difficulty for users for many months. Tascam had reported that they were working on drivers, but failed to deliver working drivers on several occasions.

Update Sept. 06, 2007: Version 1.10 of the drivers now supports Windows Vista. Click here to go to the resources page for download.

The US-122 features two XLR-based, phantom-powered mic inputs.

As one of the only small computer interfaces with analog inserts, you can use the US-122 to place hardware devices (compressors, etc.) into the recording signal chain. Two line-level inputs on balanced 1/4" TRS jacks are included, and are switchable to guitar-level for direct instrument recording into your computer. The US-122 also provides a dedicated control for adjustable zero-latency direct monitoring, providing a sonically pure reference point before entering DAW processing. Its two line-level outputs provide control for levels, and a dedicated headphone output is also included.

The Behringer UCA202 U-Control is an inexpensive 2-in/2-out USB audio interface designed for do-it-yourself recording on your Mac or PC. It's designed to sit as an interface between your mixer, instruments, or pre-amp and your computer. It is a USB bus powered device with no external power supply required, and also requires no additional drivers for installation; just plug the UCA202 into an available USB port on your computer.

The UCA202 features 2 analog line-level inputs (RCA) and and 2 analog line-level ouputs (RCA). There are high-resolution 48 kHz DAC converters to convert back and forth between the digital and analog domains. Additionally, there is a stereo headphone output with a dedicated volume level control for monitoring either your inputs or ouputs, and there is a direct S/PDIF optical output for direct digital conversion of your analag inputs.

Features

2 RCA analog line-level inputs

2 RCA analog line-level outputs

USB bus powered - no external power required

high resolution 48 kHz DACs

Stereo headphone monitor output with level control

S/PDIF digital optical output

No software drivers required

To connect your guitar or microphone to your computer, you will need a mixer or a pre-amp to boost your audio signals to line-level. For example, for $70 the Behringer TUBE ULTRAGAIN MIC200 with both 1/4" and XLR mic-level inputs can act as an interface between your microphone and the UCA202 recording interface. The UCA202 retails for around $25.

Bus powered for use with any PC or Mac, including laptops

Vista compatibility

The US-122L and US-144 did not work in Windows Vista. Recently, in September 2007 Tascam finally released working drivers for both of these interfaces.
