At the heart of this camera is a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor measuring 24.4×13.7mm. This sensor goes by the brand name Mysterium and has an equivalent surface area as Super 35mm film, but masked to a 16:9 format. The Mysterium sensor can deliver up to 4520x2540 video (2540p, 4K) at up to 60 fps with 12 bit color depth with a 66 dB dynamic range. The sensor can also be set to run in various modes, like Super 16 that emulates the 16 mm film format at a 2K resolution.

Peter Jackson was commissioned to create a 10 min. short filmed entitled Crossing the Line filmed on alpha versions of the Red One in 2006. The film was screened at NAB 2007 in Las Vegas, NV. Clips of this film and other High-Def examples can be found on the Red One gallery page.

The first Red One units will be shipped to consumer on August 30th, 2007 and can be ordered from the Red Store for $17,500.

I recommend downloading the example videos from the Red One gallery. You'll be blown away by the video quality. I've been a fan of traditional film media for a long time, but because of the Red One, I might just switch teams. It looks amazing!
