This game requires use of the Nunchuk.
Supports: 1-4 players in quarter-screen or gives the option of either vertical or horizontal splitscreen for two players.
Red Steel Controls
You aim with the Wii Remote. Very simple, right? The only problem is that it'll take a few hours (or a few hours of sleep) to really get used to them. At first, it'll seem really odd. But that's normal. Don't worry about it.
You reload and open doors (and even switch weapons and use items) by shaking the Nunchuk downward. You stab enemies by shaking the Nunchuk upward.
To throw a grenade, you hold down DOWN on the directional pad and then "toss" the Nunchuk to initiate the throwing process.
Change weapons by pressing LEFT on the directional pad. You can also reload by hitting RIGHT on the directional pad.
You move with the analog stick located on the Nunchuk. The C button (small circular button on the Nunchuk) is used for jumping, and the Z button (larger button also located on the Nunchuk) is used to duck.
It's very simple, and very intuitive. It'll take just a wee bit of getting used to, but once you have that down, you're set.
Red Steel Plot in a nutshell (without spoilers)
You're an American in Japan. Your fiance is the daughter of the leader of one of the branches of the Japanese mafia. Your goal is to save her, and attempt to keep her father alive.
Multiplayer Modes Of Play
- Deathmatch
- Team Deathmatch
- Mission*
Deathmatch is a standard deathmatch -- everyone's out for everyone else. May the slaughterfest begin. Two through four players may participate in one of four almost oversized maps.
Team Deathmatch is rather self-explanatory, also. It's a deathmatch, but -- GASP! -- with teams.
Mission* is rather intriguing. Each player is 'called' and given a mission. For example, "assault Dino Boy with only headshots. Kill anyone else, and you lose points." You are given this mission through the speaker located on your Wii Remote. You will be called, and you press 2 to answer. Remember to hold it up to your ear so you can hear it. This mode is only playable with four players.
*I'm not sure if that is what it's called.. I don't remember. Sorry.
Red Steel Graphics
They don't look like the Wii. The graphics are excellent, although of course not up to snuff with many games out on the 360 or PS3. They are still very good.
My recommendation
This game is worth it. Shell out those $50 for a copy of Red Steel, and give the game a week or so before you decide that the controls are 'liek teh suxx0rz'. You won't regret it.
My personal rating
I'd give it a 9/10. The controls aren't perfect; they could use some improvement. Changing weapons is albeit cumbersome at times, and in the one-player mode, it can become a chore to find where you're supposed to be. However, as long as you don't need to look up or down (the primary problem with the controls), the game is fine.
