RedLaser is an inexpensive iPhone application that allows users to scan UPC, EAN, and UPC-E product barcodes and then lookup those products online. Unlike other primitive barcode apps already on the market, RedLaser is cited as actually working — as it functions just like a red-laser scanner at the checkout aisle. Users take a picture of the barcode with their phone, after-which the RedLaster software scans the barcode, submits it the Internet, and then delivers average Google and Amazon prices for the product. Users then have the option of looking up further information on their product (e.g. a book review); mailing themselves or their friends a list of products; and even, for instance, submitting a scanned movie directly to their TiVo service.
