RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800

$455.14 Released August, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros:Full slide-out QWERTY keyboard - a BlackBerry specialty that blows most other phone keyboards out of the water. The first phone to run RIM's latest BlackBerry 6 operating system. 5MP camera with LED flash.

The Cons:Not the revolutionary device most were hoping for to keep RIM competitive in the consumer market. Quite bulky compared to QWERTY-less devices. Dated aesthetic for a consumer device.

The RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800 Slider is a high-end smartphone available on the AT&T mobile network in the US and on the Rogers network in Canada. It sports a 5 megapixel camera and a touchscreen as well as a slide-out QWERTY keypad similar to previous Blackberry phones.

Additionally, the BlackBerry 9800 Slider is one of the first Blackberry's to feature version 6 of the Blackberry OS.

The BlackBerryTorch's touchscreen allows users to navigate menus and prompts the way rival smartphone operating systems (iOS, Android) do while its slide-out signature BlackBerry keypad provides an alternative for those who prefer a physical interface for navigating and typing. ScottP: #samsung_galaxy_fit This phone really looks like the #rim_blackberry_torch_9800 minus the QWERTY keyboard. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. Jun 8, 11

dom: #rim_blackberry_torch_9800 I actually owned this (unlocked) for a couple of weeks in December 2010 and played around with it. It gets a ridiculous battery life, even better than my Samsung Captivate on Android. The user interface, once you get acquainted, is really to like. Good camera, great keyboard, and a whole heck of security features. I didn't find the smallish screen a problem as you have to remember that you're getting a physical keyboard as well. If it had a 4" screen this phone would just be a brick. Web browsing was ok.

What bugged me was that App World had very few apps available (at the time). For instance, in the GPS/travel category, there were 88 apps. So, I could actually look at each one to see if there's any good offline GPS navigation available. But there wasn't. Also, the CPU (600MHz Marvell) could have used a speed bump to 1GHz, but remember, that's also where a big chunk of the battery life comes from.

Overall, a very user-friendly phone with a powerful OS underneath. I wouldn't ignore BB in the "smartphone wars"! Jan 25, 11
