November 23, 2008 at 4:44 pm

"Manuel-The only complaint I have about the Xacti is that the 1920x1080 HD can't be ingested into an editing system right now. That may change as more codecs are implemented. But the good news is that even the "mid-rez" HD from this camera is very high quality and the stills are also extremely good. Also, it is VERY easy to download material from the card in the camera to your computer. So, if you want the smallest possible camera for the best quality stills and video, I think this is the best choice I have seen so far, especially in a digital storage format camera. Another good quality, very compact camera (but tape based and not quite as small as the Xacti) to consider is the Canon HV-20 or HV-30. Amazing quality for $600-900 cost. Tape is good because it is the cheapest and easiest storage medium. You are in HDV, which is a highly compressed format, but the Canon cameras make beautiful pictures and are very hardy. Good luck."

November 23, 2008 at 9:15 am

"No, the stabilization system is not perfect. However, no small camcorder does very well in this regard, in my opinion, and I have been a pro cinematographer for many years. The easiest cameras to handhold and move smoothly are those with some weight and heft and which can be supported primarily on the shoulder. The 16mm Aaton is the best of these, in my opinion. The Sanyo is so small and light that it transmits and magnifies every small movement of the hands and arms, especially when attempting to walk or move. The only way that I can think of to properly stabilize it would be to either put it on a counter weighted (our spring loaded) arm, pole or a "mini-steadicam" rig designed for smooth movement or to use a gyro attached to the tripod mounting point on the bottom of the camera. I'm sur that would produce excellent results but the form factor of the camera would, clearly, b much larger. On the other hand, the image quality from such a small and inexpensive package is quite impressive."

"when I first tested the camera at full rez i tried Final Cut Pro and it did not work. However, I have not tried it recently and they may have upgraded the available codecs. have you had success with it? Sanyo uses a non-standard implementation and their intent is to have the full rez material only play back on the camera for output through the component analog connection to their dock. They said they did not particularly care whether the digital files could be ingested directly into an editing system."

rkooris commented on Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD1010

September 1, 2008 at 11:32 am

"I have owned this camera since mid-July. Resolution and color fidelity/depth are excellent at most quality levels. Very happy with everything about it with one exception. The "full HD" 1080p options play back fine on the camera. However, I have not been able to discover a way to import this high bit rate AVCH264 video to FCP Express or iMovie HD. When I import, the clip shows up is green and audio is present but no video. Lower resolutions (everything up to 1280x720) imports fine and looks spectacular on playback. I have written to Sanyo service three times and gotten an acknowledgment from them each time that they received my question and would respond in 24 hours but no one ever responds. I suspect Sanyo got out in front of themselves, implementing a level 10 MPEG standard before anyone had worked out interfaces for import. If anyone has solved this problem, I'd love to find the answer. And I'd like a phone number for Sanyo corporate......RK"
