DirecTV HR24

The HR24 is a high-end DirecTV HD satellite receiver and DVR, to be released in early 2010 as the successor to the HR23. Among the changes are at least one additional tuner and MoCA technology, which allows the receiver to act as a server for multiple HD streams, meaning one unit could work simultaneously with several TVs in different rooms. The device outputs high-definition content in 1080p, 1080i, or 720p, via HDMI or component; composite and digital audio outputs are also standard. Details on DVR capabilities or storage capacity are not yet available.

The DirecTV Sat-Go is a complete portable satellite TV system; it includes a 17" LCD monitor, receiver, and satellite dish. All of the components are housed in a futuristic-looking briefcase that unfolds to reveal the dish and monitor components. To receive satellite signals you must point the dish to the satellite using the built-in compass and azimuth readings. The LCD monitor is tethered to the dish with a coaxial cable and can be positioned either separately or together with the dish. The angle of LCD can also be set to your liking.

You can receive all of your DirecTV programming by connecting a SIMM card connected to your DirecTV account. The unit can be powered by either AC or DC power and includes a rechargeable battery that you can expect to deliver only about 1 hour of TV time. The Sat-Go is available from DirecTV.com and units can be purchased over the phone for $1499. The website claims that quantities are limited.

The Sony SAT-HD200 was an early HD DirecTV satellite receiver. It was a significant upgrade to the SAT-HD100, adding support for 720p video, in addition to a DVI output. It also supports 480i and 1080i, and features component, S-video, composite, and RGB outputs. Optical digital audio connectivity enables Dolby Digital support. The receiver loses some of the VCR support features of the HD100, but adds more advanced aspect ratio options, offering eight ways of displaying 4:3 content on a widescreen display. PVR Functionality

To record television broadcasts you must purchase a separate, compatible external USB 2.0 hard drive. This hard drive is limited to a maximum size of 500 GB and must be formatted in FAT32. Because of the FAT32 restriction, no recording can exceed 4.1 GB in size, limiting HD recording to 38 minutes. Standard Definition recording can be hours long. There is speculation that a newer version of the player's software will automatically split the recording into multiple files as a way around the FAT32 restriction. The files are are stored in a .TS unencrypted format, capable of being archived and played back on your PC and other devices.

Installation

To begin viewing FTA satellite programming, you must also purchase a separate satellite dish, one or more LNB receivers, coaxial cabling and optional DiSEqC switch. The satellite dish must be mounted outside with line-of-sight to Geocentric satellites. Once the dish has been mounted and connected to the Coolsat 8100HD, the satellite dish and LNB must be pointed at a satellite and positioned for a maximum signal strength using the installation menu in the 8100s software and on-screen guide. Select the appropriate LNB type and satellite from the settings, and scan for channels.

DirecTV HR20

The HR20, a predecessor of the current HR24, was a high-end DirecTV HD satellite receiver and DVR. It replaced the HR10-250, offering a new, faster user interface and dropping TiVo technology, among other adjustments. Unlike previous models, the HR20 supports MPEG-4 AVC compression, enabling reception of a wider range of HD channels. The H10, an early predecessor of the 2010 model, the H24, was a DirecTV HD satellite receiver. The device outputs high-definition content in 1080i or 720p, via HDMI or component; S-video and composite outputs are also standard. A built-in ATSC tuner allows reception of over-the-air HD broadcasts with an antenna. The included remote can control up to 4 A/V components. DirecTV also sold a version with a built-in TiVo DVR, the HR10. The more recent models feature updated looks and user interfaces, but add few significant features.

It was released as a competitor to Sony’s SAT-HD200, but is nearly identical in functionality. It too is encased in a sleek silver metal box with a front-panel display that keeps users informed of what’s going on. In fact, users select the format they want directly from the panel via a remote. What the SAT520 lacks though is input signal up/down conversion to a specific output format, a feature some may find useful. Toshiba DST-3000

The Toshiba DST-3000 is a receiver originally built for the DirecTV market. This is a very basic receiver with no PC card interface and outputs via component cables only. It can process ATSC and NTSC signals, and is currently supported by DirecTV. The Dolby Digital Decoder has two channels with full 5.1 PassThru. In order to run silently it does not use a fan, which means it has no cooling system to speak of beyond a few vents.
