SYM Fiddle II 125cc

SYM is a traditional manufacturer from Taiwan. They have been manufacturing vehicles for over 5 decades and they have a solid reputation for quality and R&D.

The SYM Fiddle II 125cc is a scooter designed to accellerate SYM's market share in the "retro scooter" segment. the typical competitors would be the Vespa LX 150, the Yamaha Vino 125, the Genuine Buddy and Kymco's Poeple 150 scooter. The SYM Fiddle II is very competitively priced here in the USA with an MSRP of $2590. This is $1800 lees than the Vespa LX, $300 less than the Yamaha Vino 125cc and $200.00 less than Kymco's People 150 scooter.

Introduced in 2008, the SYM Fiddle fares average in HP, with about 8.5HP. The top speed is around 55-59mp/h which puts it at one level withthe Vespa LX and the Yamaha Vino. it's engine is a 125cc four stroke engine with 2 valves. It is air cooled like all of it's competitors.

The design and lines of the Fiddle II look very "Italian" and make the Fiddle II very likeable and "cute" looking scooter.

Like all other brands in the market, the SYM Fiddle II is equipped with a 12V electric system providing power to a 35W/35W H4 headlight and a 25/25W taillight as well as a four way turn signal system. the scooter is also equipped with a very well functioning electric start and a kick start as a backup should the electric start ever fail.

The Instrument panel consisting of speedometer, odometer, gasoline gauge, turn signal indicators and hi/lo beam indicator is arranged very clean and tidy allowing the rider to gather required information instantly without getting lost. The nightvision background lighting also adds to the attractiveness of the overall looks of the scooter.

In metro traffic the Fiddle makes a very liveley and responsive impression until speeds of about 45mp/h. After that the accelleration slows down, underlining it's proposed use for inner city traffic with speeds of up to 50mp/h. Although the Fiddle clearly offers plenty of space for two passengers it seems to prefer a single rider. The manufacturers given gasoline mileage of 106mp/g seems a little optimistic. However the 90mp/g the Fiddle actually does get is very respectable. The brakes are strong and quick thanks to the front disc brake.

Storage is one of the strongholds of the FIDDLE II: It easily holds a full face helmet under the seat and a rain jacket with gloves. because it comes standard with a nice metal rack, it allows for easy installation of a spaceous top case. The hook behind the legshield provides additional space for one or two grocery bags.

A nice little extra feature is the added anti theft device located under the seat. The scooter comes with a full two year manufacturers warranty and with a network of over 200 dealers in the USA, servicability is not an issue. All in all the Fiddle II is a very good looking solid scooter that should accomplish SYM's goals easily. There is room for a couple of model improvements but that is to be expected from a brand new market introduction. One of the negative things found during the test of this scooter is a very limited color availability. All available colors are metallic. In this area, SYM can certainly learn from comapnies like Genuine or Vespa, which have an outstanding color pallette available for their models.

Yamaha Vino 125

Scooters are an economical and fashionable method of transportation that don't have the same insurance liabilities that full on motorcycles carry. Yamaha, one of the world's leading motorcycle manufacturers, is also a leading manufacturer of scooters. For the Vino Yamaha has gone with a more retro style.

Powering the scooter is a 124cc 2-valve engine. Cooling is accomplished by forced air flow with fans kicking in if necessary to keep the temperatures under control. The transmission is fully automatic requiring no actions to shift gears. Yamaha has included an electric starting mechanism removing the need for a kickstart, however kickstart capability is still included as a backup.

There are both a 2006, and 2007 version of the Vino with few differences between the two.

As of 2009, the Yamaha Vino 125 costs $2899.00 MSRP.

SYM RV250

Written: 27 AUGUST 2009 / The SYM RV250 is the North American version of the SYM 250 GTS, with only a few differences. The GTS has fuel injection and the RV uses a carburator. The GTS also has turn signal indicators in the mirrors that are not available on the RV.

The RV250 has received rave reviews form various scooter and motorcycle magazines and websites since its introduction for excellent fit and finish, an abundance of quality features, and a ultra strong engine. The RV 250’s engine features a ceramic coated cylinder & a one-piece cylinder head. The 250.6 cc, 4 stroke, 4 valve, liquid cooled engine produces 23.4 hp with a top speed of 80+ mph. This scooter has a 3.1 gallon fuel tank, so you'll enjoy a long cruising range with mileage estimates ranging from 65 - 80 mpg, depending on speed and rider size. The weight of this model is 381 pounds, which feels very solid and well planted, even on less than smooth surfaces. The twin rear shocks feature 5 settings from sport to soft. Bottom line is a smooth, controlled ride that could be enjoyed all day without damaging your spine or the nerves in your hands.

Some of the nice features of the RV250 include a super bright Phillips HID headlight with a BMW-like 'angle eye' surrounding the HID high beam. The SYM RV250's great lighting continues in the back with a 20 LED taillights. The RV250 also features fog lights and emergency flashers. The gauges on the dash are bright and easy to read. Beyond speedo, tach, fuel and coolant temperature guages, there are numerous reminder lights for the side stand, fog lights, high beam, fuel warning, battery warning and many more to keep the driver well informed. Need storage? There are no fewer than 4 storage places on the RV250 from the huge well below the seat, to a locking glove box and 2 smaller storage bins, one between your feet that actually included a cup holder on early models and a deep one above the key featuring a power outlet so you can charge your cell phone on-the-go! Other nice touches include the spring-loaded switchblade-like passenger footrests and a trick fuel door that spins out of the way to receive petrol and smartly returns with a simple the push to the locked position ... so you'll never be able to forget it at the gas station.

Big disc brakes front and back instill confidence as does excellent handling characteristics. The seat features a lower back cushion for both the rider and the passenger. The driver's cushion is even adjustable in 3 positions. The seating position of the driver is also lower than most, so short to medium height drivers will be able to plant both feet flat on the road at a stop light. The twin mirror arms are long, but well placed for usable rear vision. 13" wheels and the excellent suspension mentioned earlier make the ride quality well above normal for a scooter. The RV250 also features a CVT transmission, so you just twist and go = no shifting. Speed builds quickly and evenly, though nothing like a sport bike. Just think ultimate scooter cruiser.

At a price point of $5K USD, the Sym RV250 offers more features and bang for the buck than any other large scooter presently offered. There is very little not to like here, so this gem should be on your short list if considering a scooter that can handle long road trips, high speeds, and is legal (and comfortable) on the highway ... though back roads are always more fun.

If you aren't familiar with Sym, actually you probably are as they have been making parts and products for Honda and other auto and motorcycle related vehicles for over 40 years. This firm out of Taiwan is turning out some outstanding product and is becoming more popular, easy to find because of their expanding dealer network, and well recognized in the USA and all over the world. Sym also makes a 300 and many smaller scooters. Check out www.sym-usa.com for more details and to find a dealer near you.

SYM Mio 50

Introduction

SYM's Mio is already a cult scooter in Taiwan. This little 49cc scooter which competes with scooters like the Honda Metropolitan has the best gasoline mileage of any gasoline powered scooter on the US market. This has to do with it's ceramic coated cylinder which reduces friction between cylinder and piston while allowing for a higher compression. A nice side effect should be that a ceramic cylinder engine should outlast standard cylinder technology scooters because of it's reduced friction effect.

The lines of the MIO 50 are very elegant, especially when viewed in profile. All the curves seem to compliment each other.

Riding the Mio 50:

In the US, all scooters under 50cc need to be restricted to a max speed of 30mp/h in order for them to be legally ridden just with a car drivers license, without having to get a special motorcycle license. So when it comes to comparing different models, one has to de-restrict the models to get a more accurate idea of how they actually perform. After removing the governor from a Mio 50, the realtively good response and accelleration is pretty impressive. The Mio 50 has no trouble hitting 40mp/h which is sufficient for little round town trips. Of course the standard punishment for taking steep hills, meaning a slow down to about 20-25mp/h, is part of the package for a 49cc scooter and to expected. The gasoline mileage is amazing with well over 100 mp/g. The scooter is extremely silent and a very comfortable ride. The footpegs for a second passenger of course are, although well designed and functional, more for decorative pruposes unless the passenger doesn't weigh more than 20lbs. Impressive was the light during night time. the 35W halogen headlight produces more light than what usually emmitts from 49cc scooters. the storage compartment under the seat cofortably holds a helmet and then some. The brakes are very responsive, mainly because the front brake is a disc brake. The instrument panel is cute and well designed. Everything is visible at a glimpse: speedometer, odometer, gasoline gauge and even an oil change indicator is included to help remind the rider when it is time to change the engine oil. The scooter makes a very sturdy and dependable impression. The materials seem solid and after the scooter was knowcked over by a car, there were no visible scratches anywhere. The only negative point was that there is no extra luggage rack and it seems to be difficult to install one because of the position of the gas tank cap. All together the SYM Mio is a very attractive little 49cc scooter which is a lot more solid built than most other scooters in this category.

SPECS

Big fun. Maybe it's the groovy palette of colors—ranging from Salsa and Kiwi, to Orange Ice and Kanji graphics—this 49cc scoot comes in. Or perhaps it's simply the hip, carefree flair it exudes as it ambles about town. Either way, one ride will be all it takes to have you grinning ear to ear.

SYM HD200

Please rewrite in original words from a neutral point of view, and if you're the writer, please move this to the comments section.

The SYM HD200 is probably the most overlooked scooter in the USA right now. In terms of applied technology, technical data, reliability and performance it surely sweeps it's competitors in the 150cc range away, while beating some of their pricing structure substantially.

The applied technologies for the SYM HD series are astonishing given the MSRP of $3790:

4-valve technology

Ceramic coated cylinder

Water cooling

60W halogen headlight

The SYM HD200 has no problem achieving top speeds between 70 and 80mp/h, making it the fastest scooter in the field. because of it's water cooled engine it also has no problem maintaining speeds of 60-65mp/h for sustained periods of time.

The 60W headlight pays tribute to the achievable higher average speeds by lighting up highways and roads at night like only a bigger motorcycle or car would.

Transporting two people on the SYM HD200 is absolutely no problem at all. the scooter feels completely at easy with the extra weight.

Because the SYM HD series was introduced to the World back in 2003, it ia also a very mature product with none of the typical "birth problems". Built in the same factory that made Honda products from 1967 through 2002.

the scooter produces about 16hp which is roughly twice that of a Vespa LX 150! The seat height, weight ratio and wheel base are in the same ball park as the competition so although it makes a larger subjective first time impression than say a Vespa, objectively it isn't infact the Vespa sits higher than the HD200.

The handling is outstanding thanks to the 16" tires which also outlive the typically small scooter tires by thousands of miles. the storage compartment under the seat could be a little larger (although it does hold a full face helmet) but to compensate for that the SYM HD200 comes with a standard rack, allowing for carrying cases to be mounted.

Noticeable were also the very loud horn and the insistent loud click of the activated turn signals, reminding the rider to switch it off, even on loud highways.

The two year warranty rounds of the impression of this very mature and appealing scooter.

The L.E.AD.E.R. (Low Emissions ADvanced Engine Range) engine has the power to pull away from almost any kind of traffic you encounter. The Granturismo's exceptionally low levels of air and noise pollution well exceed the standards being considered in Europe and America many years from now.

With its chrome mirrors and classic Vespa lines, the Granturismo is a thoroughly modern scooter true to its heritage. On the Granturismo you find the kinds of touches that have made Vespa world-famous: pressed steel monocoque chassis, 5-spoke die-cast alloy wheels, chrome retractable passenger footrests, and a classic floorboard design. And the Granturismo shines in the evening: the vintage-style dashboard lights up blue for excellent night-time visibility, and the halogen headlamp provides plenty of illumination.
