Shoddy Battle
Released January, 2010
The Pros:Excellent way to try new team combinations without having to invest the time breeding, training, etc. Huge amount of servers for all sorts of specialized metagames. Very active online community, never hard to find a match in larger servers.
Shoddy Battle is somewhat unique among emulators. While most emulators try to replicate the firmware of a given console in an attempt to allow users to play images of any of that console's games on the computer, Shoddy Battle recreates one specific of one aspect of one game, or series of games, using the Java engine and little code from the actual game itself.

However, since its aim is to recreate another device's features on a computer, it could still be said to be an emulator. Shoddy Battle is the competitive Pokemon player's dream. Using the program, players can create their ideal team, choosing six Pokemon, their movesets, abilities, EVs, and every other factor, so long as such a team could be feasibly recreated in the latest Pokemon version on an actual console. Players then go online to the server of their choice to battle rivals from around the world. Shoddy Battle can replicate almost every possible battle scenario present in the latest Pokemon games, HeartGold and SoulSilver. In addition, some commonly accepted rules determined by the community can also be imposed on a server-by-server basis. These rule sets are in place to support a more competitively viable metagame. Shoddy Battle is an open-sourced freeware project.
