Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a high-end Android smartphone that doubles as a dedicated gaming device. It features a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 processor, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM and a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen. The Xperia Play's defining feature, however, is its slide-out dedicated game pad reminiscent of the PSP Go's.

HTC EVO 4G

The Evo 4G is a Smartphone from HTC and is one of the first of its kind to be able to connect to Sprint's 4G network. The phone runs on the Android 2.1 operating system using a Qualcomm 1-GHz processor. For storage the phone has 1-GB of ROM, 576-MB of RAM and an 8-GB microSD memory card. It has no keyboard, but is controlled using the 4.3-inch multi-touch screen. The phone has two cameras. The one on the back has a flash and can take 8 megapixel still images and 720p videos. There is also a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front presumably for use as a webcam for live video chats. Unlike many Smartphones, the Evo 4G has a built-in stand so that the user can watch videos hands-free. It also has a mini HDMI output for watching captured, downloaded or streaming video on a full-sized high-definition screen. The Evo 4G boasts many other modern "bells and whistles" including GPS, digital compass, 3D maps, G-sensor, light sensor, proximity sensor and an FM radio.

Apple iPhone 4

The Apple iPhone 4 is the next-generation iPhone which releases June 24th 2010. The major upgrades from the iPhone 3GS are the changed form factor (thinner design), 4x higher resolution, front facing camera for video chat, and upgraded camera system with 5MP photos, and HD recording. Apple touts the largest upgrade with the new video chat features, however there are currently severe limitations to the service that they are calling "FaceTime". Most notably, video chat only works between iPhone 4 devices, and it requires a WiFi connection. Its new processor is an ARM Cortex A8 (ARMv7 ISA) that was developed by Intrinsity and Samsung in 2009, and is either known as the Samsung S5PC110 "Hummingbird" or the Apple A4 (the only difference being the integrated PowerVR hardware graphics accelerator by Imagination Technologies). This line of processors is used in the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy S series phones, and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Other upgrades place the iPhone 4 among the best in class in the smartphone category. The display is the highest resolution available on any smartphone (as of June 2010), it is one of the only phones that can do HD video recording of 720p at 30FPS, and the added gyrosensor gives the software total awareness of the phone's spatial orientation. Among all of these improvements Apple has also been able to reduce the size of the phone compared to the 3GS and increase the battery life by 40%.

HTC Desire

The HTC Desire is a touchscreen mobile phone released by T-Mobile in March 2010 and described as a clone to Google’s notorious Nexus One. It maintains its competitor’s ultra-slim design, Qualcomm 1-GHz Snapdragon processor, and Google Android 2.1 operating system. HTC Hero

The HTC Hero is the Taiwanese manufacturer's latest flagship smartphone, a touch-screen device launching in 2009 and attempting to rival Apple's iPhone. Powered by Google's Android operating system, the Hero features a 3.2-inch multi-touch LCD display with a 320 x 480 resolution. Navigation is achieved through a trackpad and onscreen keyboard in addition to the touch screen. RIM BlackBerry Bold 9000

The BlackBerry Bold (aka RIM BlackBerry 9000) is the latest smartphone (available August 21, 2008) from RIM to be released by AT&T on November 4th 2008, for $299 with a 2-year contract. Earlier retail estimates were expected to be around $300 - $400, but this latest release hints that it will probably be much higher. The Bold has high-speed data connectivity with support for 3G networks (quad-band EDGE and tri-band HSDPA) and WiFi (802.11 a/b/g). Other improvements over the BlackBerry Curve including a doubling of CPU speed to 624 MHz and a doubling of screen resolution to 480 x 320 resolution display (Half-VGA). The N9 is a medium to high end smartphone from Nokia, running the open-source, Linux-based MeeGo operating system. MeeGo is a joint development effort between Nokia and Intel, though Nokia has substantially reduced its commitment to the platform after the announcement of the partnership with Microsoft and its Windows Phone software. Lacking staunch support from its own manufacturer, it is likely that application development for the N9 will lack substantially. However, the N9 convinces with a few innovations. For instance, it has a buttonless design (apart from volume and shutter), and instead wholly relies on swipe gestures that switch between a graphical task manager, a notifications view, and the app launcher. This makes it extremely easy to navigate to the most accessed features, even with just one finger. Reviews also applaud the extremely smooth, speedy, and polished user interface implementation, as well as Nokia's excellent maps and offline GPS navigation at no extra cost. Other highlights are a Gorilla Glass protected AMOLED screen, a high-quality 8MP camera with LED flash & Carl Zeiss optics and shutter speed beating point-and-shoot cameras, HD video recording, unibody design, up to 64GB internal storage, WebKit/HTML5 web browser, and NFC (like Google's Nexus S). Nokia Asha 303

The Nokia Asha 303 is an entry-level smartphone running Nokia's budget Series 40 edition 9.2 OS similar to the Nokia Asha 300. LG Optimus T

The LG Optimus T is a low-end smartphone running Android 2.2 very similar to the LG Optimus S. The main difference between the two phones is carrier: the Optimus T is a T-Mobile exclusive while the Optimus S is only available from Sprint. Otherwise, they only sport minor physical differences (the most important being the T's lack of dedicated camera and voice buttons) while sharing the same internal specs and features including: a 600MHz processor, 512MB of RAM (512MB of ROM), Qualcomm Adreno 200 graphics and a 3.2" HVGA capacitive LCD touchscreen.

Scheduled to be released in 2H 2010, the Nokia N8 will be a media-rich smartphone and the first to feature Nokia's open-source Symbian^3 operating system. Motorola Triumph

The Motorola Triumph is a smartphone that runs Google's Android 2.2 operating system. It is only available on the Virgin Mobile US network as a pre-paid device. With a Qualcomm snapdragon processor, 4.1 inch display, and 2GB of built-in memory it is a step ahead of most pre-paid smartphones in the US market. It is interesting to see Motorola adopting Qualcomm processors as opposed to the Texas-Instruments OMAP processors that have used in so many of their Android devices. The MSM8655 system-on-chip provides more than adequate performance for most users as the hardware is identical to that of the HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon) and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. Other features include an HDMI output, A-GPS, and a 5 mega pixel camera. The Motorola Triumph is an excellent options for buyers looking for an affordable smartphone with good performance.

The Samsung Captivate (SGH-i897 in the US, SGH-i896 in Canada) is a high-end smartphone running Google's Android version 2.1 on AT&T (US) or Rogers (Canada). Being a Samsung Galaxy S line phone, the Samsung Captivate is essentially the North American version of the international Galaxy S as it sports basically the same specs and features: a 4-inch Super-AMOLED display, 7.2Mbps HSPA, a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 5 megapixel camera with 720p recording, a 3.5mm headphone jack, 802.11n WiFi and 16GB of onboard storage (expandable to 48GB via microSD). At the time of its release, the Samsung Hummingbird integrates the most powerful graphics accelerator found in mobile phone processors: Its PowerVR SGX540 processes 28 MPolys/s and 1Gpx/s@200MHz. As a comparison, the iPhone 4 and 3GS use the SGX535 (14 MPolys/s, 1Gpx/s@200MHz) and Motorola's Droid X uses the SGX530 (14 MPolys/s, 500Mpx/s@200MHz). The Samsung Captivate's US siblings are: T-Mobile Vibrant, Verizon Fascinate, and Sprint Epic 4G.

Differing from the international version of the Galaxy S, the Captivate does not feature a front-facing camera, has a different body design, and has four main buttons on the front (instead of three).

The iPhone 3G is the successor to the popular cell phone from Apple. The biggest changes over the first version is the addition of 3G high-speed data access, which Apple claims is over two times faster than the original when accessing the Internet, and the addition of Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities. Outside of these changes, most of the unit remains the same as the previous, with the same touch screen, camera and memory sizes. The original iPhone 3G is the predecessor to the faster iPhone 3GS.

Difference between iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G

3G support - when accessing the data network the data transfer speeds are substantially faster (over twice as fast according to Apple).

GPS - the iPhone 2G had basic location finding that was accurate to hundreds of meters, while the iPhone 3G's implementation is accurate to a few feet for most locations. Additionally, the iPhone 3G renders your position in real time.

Case design - the iPhone 3G is slightly thicker at 12.3mm versus the 2G's 11.6mm. The 3G uses a plastic backing instead of brushed metal like on the 2G, and now the iPhone's headphone jack is "flush" which lets you use regular headphones without the need for an adapter.

iPhone 3.0 Software Additions

Push Notifications - you can now be notified by an Application even if it's not currently running. However the notifications are limited to simple status messages and is not full background processing like the Palm Pre is capable of doing.

Copy-and-Paste - cut, copy and paste text between different applications.

Undo/Redo - Shake the phone to undo/redo when using certain applications like Notes.

Improved Calendar support - Calendar application supports more formats now including the ics standard to sync with Google and Yahoo Calendar services.

iPod Touch and iPhone owners can download new applications and programs developed for the devices from the official App Store. Announced and demonstrated at the CTIA 2010, the Galaxy S is Samsung's first Android device featuring its own 1GHz Cortex-A8 based ARM application processor named "Hummingbird" (labeled as "Apple A4" in the iPad and iPhone 4) which also integrates hardware graphics acceleration (PowerVR SGX540 core). Being a rather large smartphone, it comes with a 4-inch Super-AMOLED screen and an Android skin called "Smart Life" atop Android version 2.1. It can be paired with an optionally available "Home Cradle" for use as a digital photo frame, table clock, calendar, and music station. Samsung is targeting 110 countries in North America, Latin America, Australia, and Asia. In the U.S., the Galaxy S is launched on all four national carriers: T-Mobile Vibrant, Verizon Fascinate, Sprint Epic 4G, and AT&T Captivate. It is also announced to be available on the regional carrier U.S. Cellular.

The Samsung Epic 4G Touch is a subsidized Samsung Galaxy S II offering released in September 2011. This phone shouldn't be confused with the Samsung Epic 4G which bears a similar name but is a very different smart phone. The Epic 4G Touch has been upgraded to Android 2.3.4, dual-core CPU and a larger 4.5" Super AMOLED screen. It features both a front-facing and rear-facing camera (with flash). The Nokia 5630 is a higher-end mp3 player phone, an upgraded version of the Nokia 5320 still designed for the 3G network. Frame design is similar and the display features 16 million colors. The Motorola Droid (development codename "Sholes") is powered by Android, an operating system developed by the Open Handset Alliance to provide an open Linux Kernel platform for independent developers. This means that there is a whole realm of unique widgets, programs and features that can't be found on a traditional Windows based operating system. The Droid takes full advantage of this, providing top of the line hardware to back it up. The first generation Apple iPhone was touted as a total revolution in mobile devices. The iPhone boasts an impressive list of features and specifications and is summed up in 3 ways: iPod + cell phone + Internet connectivity. Any traditional forms of interacting with mobile devices has been stripped away to leave room for one large touchscreen. When the iPhone first launched there were two versions available, but due to strongly slanted sales the 4GB version has been discontinued with the 8GB retailing for $399. iTunes support

Using the iPhone's wireless connectivity, or Edge data network users can connect to the Wi-Fi iTunes music store. This allows people to purchase and download music directly from their iPhone without a computer. Purchased music automatically syncs with your computer when the iPhone is reconnected.

iPhone users are also given an extra option in the iTMS through the purchase of custom ring tones. Ring tones can be purchased for 99 cents on top of the price of the song. If you already own the song then you only have to pay an extra 99 cents, but if you don't then you have to purchase both for $1.98. The ring tones are not premade, instead you can create your own snippet of the song to use as a ring tone at a maximum length of 30 seconds. As of this writing 500,000 songs are available for ring tones.

The HTC HD2 — codenamed Leo — is a Windows Mobile 6.5 based smartphone released onto T-Mobile’s 3G networks in early 2010. It features a 4.3” WVGA capacitive touchscreen and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. Included is HTC Sense, a smartphone functionality that allows a user to lace their home screen with shortcuts to whatever essentials they need immediate access to: mail, calendar, messaging, browser, favorite websites, or a downloaded application. This allows the phone operation to be snappy — meaning less wasted time combing through endless menus — and more multitasking friendly. And like the iPhone 3GS (its latest competitor), the HD2 allows users to scroll, zoom in/out, and flip through web-pages with just their finger. Additional features include a 5MP camera with autofocus and dual LED flash (which is better than the iPhone), Geo-Tagging, and three virtual keyboard options: full QWERTY, compact QWERTY, or standard 12-key phone keypad. The device will be introduced on March 24th in the US on T-Mobile for $449 off contract or $199 on a 2-year contract.

Additional Information

The HD2’s predecessor is the HTC Touch HD, which sported a smaller 3.5" TFT capacitive touch screen with a 320x480 resolution display. Most notable about the HD2 is that it can be used to replace a conventional automobile GPS system.

The RIM BlackBerry Storm 9500 smartphone is the first BlackBerry to be compatible with the 3G wireless network and is one of the more premium BlackBerry models. Instead of a keypad, the 9500 uses a large 3.25"-diagonal touch screen to navigate. The screen auto-rotates based on position, and uses a full QWERTY layout with SureType to increase accuracy. The 9500 has a 3.2-megapixel digital camera with auto flash, auto focus and video recording. It comes with a built-in GPS receiver and BlackBerry Maps, and automatically geo-tags any photographs taken with their location. The Nokia X2-Slate is a lower mid-cost GSM quadband smart phone, for use on the T-Mobile network. This model is designed to offer basic communication options in an affordable package, and so lacks a few common smart phone features. Though a basic internet browser featuring YouTube is offered by the X2-Slate, it is not equipped with 3G. That being said, all of the usual messaging and texting options are present here, as well as mobile email. Another feature that makes this model a lower cost option is its display. This display is a small 2.4 inches of low resolution (320 x 240), and lacks touchscreen functionality. One smart phone fixture that is included here is a lithium ion battery, which offers about four and a half hours of talk time per charge. Introduced at CES 2009, the Pre is a new long-awaited smartphone from Palm. Featuring a 3.1" multitouch display along with a full QWERTY keyboard, it is one of the first smartphones to feature both types of user interaction. It also has a 3MP camera, complete with LED flash and 8GB of built-in storage. Palm aims to make the Pre the #1 competitor to the Apple iPhone by making it more fully featured than Apple's solution. The LG Optimus Black was announced along side the Optimus X2 during 2011 CES. Unlike the X2, the Optimus Black does not have the powerful Nvida Tegra 2 application processors. Instead, it uses second generation Snapdragon processors which will provide more than adequate performance none the less. LG claims it is the world's thinnest mobile devices at only 9.2mm. One of the main features of the Optimus Black is the NOVA display (480x800), with a brightness of 700nits, it is much brighter than many existing displays which means using the phone in direct day light should be no problem. Other features include wireless b/g/n connectivity, a microSD card slot, a 5 mega pixel primary camera, and a 2 mega pixel frotn facing camera. Whist the LG Optimus Black might not receive the same amount of hype as the Optimus X2, it is still a capable Android handset.

While otherwise almost identical to the earlier version, the 4G capable Nexus also comes equipped with Google Voice integration, allowing users to make their existing cell number their Google Voice number without paying the regular porting fee associated with the switch. The Nokia N79 is a higher-end smartphone with very similar features to the Nokia N78. Released on November 21st, 2008, the BlackBerry Storm is RIM's first touch screen BlackBerry device. The Storm (previously thought to be called the BlackBerry Thunder) competes squarely with the Apple iPhone and the T-Mobile G1 (the first Google Android phone). It features a similarly sized 3.25" HVGA 480 x 360 single-touch display, with pop-up software keyboard that can be used in either full-width QWERTY landscape orientation or Suretype portrait orientation. RIM's BlackBerry Bold 9780 is a forthcoming smartphone, by all accounts largely based on the current Bold 9700 model, and featuring a very similar form factor, keyboard, and optical trackpad. The main updates seem to be in the operating system, expected to be BlackBerry OS 6, as well as the WebKit browser that can play more multimedia formats. Other updates include a larger camera resolution than the 9700 and twice the RAM. Most other standard BlackBerry features can be expected, and this model will definitely be 3G-compatible, and will have WiFi and GPS reception as well.

The Nokia N97 is a touchscreen phone which slides open to reveal a small QWERTY keyboard. The screen can be angled, allowing the consumer to use the phone as a mini-computer to browse the web or write e-mails. The battery is capable of 1.5 days of audio playback or 4.5 hours of video, making it good for a movie every so often but not a device to rely on for long flight. It has A-GPS and 32GB of onboard memory along with a microSD expansion slot. The touchscreen is 3.5 inch and has a 16:9 aspect ration, 640 x 360 pixel. The price tag attached to the Nokia N97 package is not cheap, so this phone is not the best for those who need to watch their budget.

HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio

The Android based HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio comes with a choice of either YourBeats in-ear headphones or Beats Solo over-ear headphones with the limited edition and will be available in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific in November 2011. Beats Audio sound processing has been designed with Dr. Dre to be used exclusively with Beats headphones and has been tailor made to provide optimum sound quality when used in tandem. Unlike the popular Sensation XE, it sports only a single core processor, although what it loses in CPU speed it makes up for with the larger 4.7" screen and slimmer form factor of 9.9mm. It features an 8 megapixel color camera with dual-LED flash capable of recording 720p video with stereo audio, while on front is a smaller webcam style 1.3 megapixel fixed focus camera. DLNA network certification means you can wirelessly stream content to a compatible TV for watching on the big screen, while it also has built-in WiFi and GPS and supports advanced Bluetooth 3.0 profiles as listed below in the features section. Sensors for use in various applications include gyro sensor, g-sensor, digital compass, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor. Although the standard memory is fixed at 16GB and there is no removable media card slot, a decent portion of the onboard memory has been allotted to handling the Beats Audio processing, which is worth the smaller storage if you enjoy pristine audio.

The Nokia 701, code named 'helen', is the most featured out of three new phones from Nokia to be released in the third quarter of 2011 including the world's smallest touch screen phone, the Nokia 700, and a music oriented phone with the world's loudest speaker, the Nokia 600. The 5.93 oz. LG Thrill 4G (otherwise known as the LG Optimus 3D) is a smartphone by AT&T US. It features a glasses-free 3D LCD capacitive 4.3" 800x480 touch-screen for gaming and viewing 3D pictures and videos taken by the included 5 megapixel stereoscopic 3D camera. The phone is able to shoot 3D video in 720p, 2D in 1080p and functions with youtube 3D (3D video uploads to youtube). The customizable home screen carousel is also in 3D and may be swiped left or right to select icons to navigate to. The phone is able to auto-rotate using a built-in accelerometer and also has a proximity sensor for auto-shutoff to save battery life. The 4 main controls on the bottom of the phone are touch-sensitive and do not physically move when pressed. A MicroSD slot is also included for added storage of up to 32GB. This phone runs on the Android 2.2 OS and contains a Dual-core 1GHz A9 processor. The LG Thrill 4G will work in 4G networks and has an original memory of 16GB owing to 8GB built-in and 8GB on the memory card, not to mention it also includes an HDMI port for viewing pictures and videos on a television. The phone is a black colour with a brushed metal casing design. The stereoscopic camera logo is displayed on a shiny black brushed metal strip on the back of the camera holding the lens and flash. This screen is at a lower resolution than the HTC Evo 3D at 960x540.
