The Sony DVDirect VRD-P1 is a multi-function optical drive designed to easily transfer home videos to a DVD disc from select new Sony Handycam camcorders, starting with models DCR-SR47, DCR-SR67, DCR-SR87, DCR-SX40, DCR-SX41 and DCR-SX60. A downgrade from the VRD-MC10, the VRD-P1 lacks the compatibility and functionality of its upgraded peer in that the VRD-P1 works only with Handycam camcorders. Nevertheless, for those consumers who do possess the aforementioned camcorders, the VRD-P1 will be a much needed and powerful asset to their inventory. By attaching the VRD-P1 to one of the above-mentioned camcorders via USB, consumers can transfer standard definition video to a DVD disc for playback on almost all at-home DVD players. In addition, VRD-P1 users maintain the option to record either all the video content on the camcorder, only new content captured since the last DVD burn, or merely specifically selected video clips.
