Yesterday Sony help a press meeting to demonstrate the PS3 and shed light on all the missing details before launch. Here's the summary of what was show
Playstation 3 Services
Playstation Store
- Online marketplace similar to Xbox Live Marketplace.
- Download demos, trailers, and downloadable games similar to Xbox Live Arcade (see Blast Factor and fl0w).
- Uses a wallet system where you give credit card details, or use pre-paid cards that can be bought at retail stores.
- The prices of the items in the Store are given in dollar values with no point system
- Download Playstation 1 games and transfer them to your PSP (maximum $14.99)
- Eventually Playstation 3 will be able to play these downloaded PSOne titles
Operating System

Uses XMB, the same system as on the PSP. This is where you interact with your Friend's List, go to the Playstation Store, manage your console settings, etc.
The Playstation 3 ships with a built-in web-browser. Surf the net from the comfort of your couch, handles all the latest Internet tech including javascript and flash compatibility.
Media Capabilities
- Plays all major video and audio formats
- Slideshow creation for your pictures with an extremely slick interface
- No networked playback through the default dashboard
- can play media stored on the Hard-drive, a connected USB device (including the PSP) and media stored on a memory card/stick
- High-Definition Blu-Ray playback
- NO upscaling DVD playback, even when going through HDMI (big headscratcher on that one)
- Use the PSP as a Location Free player. Currently there has to be a direct WiFi connection, but Sony plans on allowing WiFi playback from anywhere.
Online Service
- Intended to be comparable to Xbox Live
- FREE
- Access to Playstation Store, Friends, voice chat, video chat, text messaging
- Multiplayer gaming
- Downloadable games similar to Xbox Live Arcade
Other Playstation 3 Software
- Full backwards compatibility with all Playstation One, and Playstation 2 titles (with no enhancements)
- Linux will be released for the PS3, either through downloading it yourself or purchasing the DVDs. This will be a full Linux distrobution, so expect lots of cool applications to be released. The Linux distro will solve the problem of no networked media playback from within the default dashboard, as there are many media centre programs that are available for Linux.
