What effect will eBay have on the PS3 launch?

I'm still going out to buy 2 on Launch day...(late late night...early early morning) To try to sell on Ebay. Worst case ???? I bring it back to Walmart...and keep the other.

Walmart takes everything back.

Ya, there really is no risk to picking up a console to sell, at the very least you can return it for a full refund. The only thing you're losing out on is the hours wasted, freezing your butt in line overnight. If you have a hookup where you didn't have to wait in line, well, then you really lucked out!

Right now the average price for a pre-order is $1600, I still don't know if that number will go up or down on the 17th. I imagine the price is going to be extremely volatile though and depending on your timing/luck you could make out like a bandit or maybe even lose money.

PS3 Auction Prices a Bargain

People's greed is their own undoing. They just make the simple equation of Buy PS3->eBay->Profit and don't realize that 300 THOUSAND people are thinking the exact same thing. As a result, the prices are going to collapse.

Japan is definitely a sign of things to come.

And I was right!

Average prices are going for around $900. It's still above the $600 MSRP but after all the eBay and Pay Pal fees you're only looking at a couple hundred bucks. Is that really worth all the time spent waiting in the cold, missing work, etc?

On the gaming side the result has been a very low attach rate for games. Gamestop recently released their numbers stating that the Wii had an attach rate of 3 games for every one console, with the PS3 coming in at only 1.5. They blame it on the high volume of people looking to resell the console, buuuuuuut I think some of it has to do with the fact that the PS3's launch lineup is pretty crap outside of Resistance.
