Forgoing the usual Dualshock naming convention, the controller to Sony's third gaming console is named the SIXAXIS. Just like the Dualshock's descriptive moniker, SIXAXIS refers to the controllers new and built-in motion sensing capabilities. SIXAXIS can detect all three types of rotational motion: pitch, yaw, and roll, as well as acceleration in the 3 XYZ axis. SIXAXIS is wireless and uses the Bluetooth 2 protocol to communicate with the PS3 console.

The other main change that Sony has implemented is replacing the traditional L2, and R2 buttons with analog triggers, similar to the Xbox and Gamecube controllers. Sony has also introduced a "home" button in the middle of the controller to access the PS3's XMB interface.
All of these features have come at a cost though. Sony's SIXAXIS does not have rumble support at all. No rumble in the SIXAXIS has been a controversial point, and Sony claims they removed rumbe functionality for economic reasons.
