The Sony VPL-VW60 is a high-end 1080p projector that is the successor to the 2006 VPL-VW50, known as the Pearl. Sony continues the use of its proprietary SXRD technology, a derivative of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) technology, in this case using 3 chips to reduce and eliminate artifacts such as rainbow strobing. Announced during CES 2007 this projector gained a lot of attention because of its extremely high 35,000:1 contrast ratio; however, in real world the contrast performance is comparable to other projectors in this range.

Features
- 1080p native resolution
- 35,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. ANSI Contrast at 317:1
- Powered zoom and focus.
- Noise level at 22dB
- 96Hz mode
The controversy in contrast ratios stems from the Full-On/Full-Off measurement and the use of the dynamic iris. With every frame the projector analyzes the image and controls how bright the overall picture is, so dark scenes are darker, with bright scenes being brighter. Previous auto iris technologies were slow and distracting, but the auto iris in the VW60 alongside other projectors in this class have eliminated the obvious changing of light levels.
For handling 24 frames per second (FPS) content delivered by Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies the projector shifts to a 96Hz mode that repeats every frame 4 times. Since 96 is a direct multiple of 24 no conversion is necessary which eliminates any kind of stuttering artifacts that are visible when going from 24FPS to the standard 60Hz.
