Features

  • 11" OLED; 960 x 540 pixel resolution
  • 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio
  • digital tuner
  • inputs: HDMI, USB, Ethernet
  • sound: 2 x 1 Watt speaker
  • price: ¥200,000 ($1740)
  • release date: December 1, 2007

OLED displays use Organic Light-Emitting Diodes which have an emissive electroluminescent layer made up of organic compounds. Organic compounds are "printed" on a polymer layer to accurately recreated different colors. OLEDs do not require backlights like traditional LCDs, thus improving the contrast ratio dramatically.

The display will be the first commercially available OLED display, and Sony is hoping to get the jump on the competition (Toshiba is making one) for the OLED market which may eventually overtake plasmas and LCDs. It is criticized for being an impractical product because of its high price and small screen size.

Who would buy a T.V. this small?

I'm with HK, what's the big deal if you'd never buy something this small. The iPod Touch is super thin as well but it's never going to replace your TV.

It's purely a marketing play for Sony. They're hedging their bets against OLED becoming the dominant format, and they want to be first to market. Make Sony synonymous with OLED.
