Yamaha NS-10M

The Yamaha NS-10M studio reference monitor speaker (aka NS10M) is widely popular amongst audio professionals, and is notorious for its very flat frequency response even to the point that they are not pleasant to listen to. The wants and needs of the audio engineer are different than the typical consumer, so this is a welcome thing as the NS-10M monitors will reveal the truth of mix. The NS-10M studio monitors are almost an industry standard for mixing and are easily recognized by their standout white mid-range driver.

Tissue Paper Phenomenom

Engineers unhappy with the "ugliness" of tHe NS-10M speakers in their studio have devised a scheme in which they cover the tweeter driver with tissue paper to reduce some of the high frequencies, giving them a warmer sound. Bob Hodas has done an in-depth analysis of this practice. A redesigned NS-10M Studio model appeared later that rectified the problem with the tweeter, making the tissue paper solution obsolete.

Availability

Originally released circa 1982, Yamaha discontinued the production of the Yamaha NS-10M speakers (somewhere before 2003, reference needed), and replaced them with the Yamaha MSP5, and Yamaha MSP10 studio monitors. In spite of being discontinued, the NS-10M are still widely used in studios and even won Yamaha Corporation a Grammy in 2007 for their technical excellence and impact on the recording industry. You can find them online sold as a balanced pair on eBay selling for around $550.

B&W CM9

The B&W CM9 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker from B&W's CM Series that can handle up to 200 watts of power. The speaker features a 1" Nautilus tube loaded aluminum dome tweeter, 6" woven Kevlar cone FST midrange, and dual 6.5" paper Kevlar cone bass drivers to provide a frequency response of 56Hz - 22kHz. It is designed with high quality components and includes B&W's Flowport technology which minimizes turbulence to produce crisp sound. The CM9 is larger and more powerful than B&W's CM7 floorstanding speaker due to the presence of an additional woofer driver. B&W 685

The B&W 685 is the larger of two bookshelf/stand mountable main speakers in Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) affordable high-end 600 series of home audio speakers. These smaller sized speakers are ideal for a hi-fi or home cinema system in a small to medium sized room. These speakers can be wall mounted, shelf/table mounted or are also designed to mount on the B&W's FS-700/CM stand (not included). The 6.5" woven Kevlar cone handles all bass and mid frequencies, and the incorporated fixed centre bullet helps smooth the response into upper frequencies. The 1" aluminum dome tweeter, which handles all high frequencies, is mounted closer to the driver to improve the integration and vertical dispersion of the two units. The tweeter is contained in a Nautilus tapering tube, which is designed to only project sound through a hollow pole magnet frontwards, and is tapered towards the rear to eliminate reflections off the rear of the cabinet producing unwanted sound effects. The B&W 685 is avaialable in four vinyl finishes: black ash, light oak (not available in USA/Canada), red cherry and wengé; and comes with a removable black cloth grill. The B&W 683 is the largest set of main speakers in Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) affordable high-end 600 series of home audio speakers. These large floorstanding speakers are ideal for a hi-fi or home cinema system in a large room. A pair of 6.5" aluminum/paper/Kevlar cones with rigid mushroom design and front firing flowport provide a deep and dynamic bottom end with plenty of power. The 6" woven Kevlar cone is dedicated to midrange and the incorporated fixed centre bullet helps smooth the response into upper frequencies. This Kevlar midrange is the only cone in the entire 600 series to incorporate FST technology, which essentially uses a foam ring allowing the cone to float freely for an improved cone response. There is a 1" aluminum dome tweeter located in the top of the cabinet, which handles the high frequencies. The tweeter is contained in a Nautilus tapering tube, which is designed to only project sound through a hollow pole magnet frontwards, and is tapered towards the rear to eliminate reflections off the rear of the cabinet producing unwanted sound effects. The Bose CineMate is a 2.1 channel powered home theater speaker system designed to provide a multichannel sound experience for smaller rooms. The Blackstone TL1600 is a compact 5.1-channel surround sound system-in-a-box from Polk Audio. The TL150 is identical but lacks a subwoofer and costs $100 less. The SVS PB13-Ultra is a high performance 13" powered box subwoofer and is SVS' flagship model from their Ultra box series, intended to compete with in-home theater and media room subwoofers. The RC-64 II is a high-end center speaker from Klipsch, the top option in the manufacturer's Reference Series. It utilizes a 1.75" titanium-diaphragm tweeter and four 6.5" woofers, outputting 200W RMS, 50W more than the dual-woofer RC-62 II, a step down. Both models features "Tractrix Horn" technology (also used in non-Reference Series Klipsch speakers), which the manufacturer says reduces distortion, improving sound clarity and precision. B&W 801D

The B&W 801D is a 3-way floorstanding loudspeaker from B&W's high end 800 Series that handles up to 1000 watts of power. The speaker is an upgrade to B&W's Nautilus 801 and is designed slightly taller with a curved cabinet that includes Matrix interlocking bracing for rigidness and stands on a heavy cast aluminum plinth. It features a 6" Kevlar cone FST midrange driver that is housed in a rounded Marlan enclosure and has a 1" diamond dome tweeter positioned above the midrange which is the same layout as B&W's 800D. However, the 801D has a large 15" Rohacell cone bass driver with a mushroom diaphragm and re-inforced by a down-firing Flowport compared to the dual 10" bass drivers of the 800D. The diamond dome tweeter is a very high performance tweeter that can handle frequencies above human hearing and works with the midrange and bass to produce realistic three-dimensional sound and a frequency response of 29Hz to 28kHz. The speaker is available in real wood veneer finishes of Rosenut or Cherrywood and comes with a black cloth grille. It retails at approximately $9000 a piece.

Bose CineMate GS Series II

The Bose CineMate GS Series II is a 2.1-channel surround sound system consisting of an interface module, 2 Gemstone speakers, and an Acoustimass woofer module. It utilizes Bose’s proprietary TrueSpace technology to deliver a surround-sound experience with deep-fitted lows and squealing-like highs. At its core is the interface module, which includes analog and optical audio inputs for accepting transmissions directly from a television. Included also is a universal remote control built to in-fact control not just the unit, but also the attached television and any other components — such as a VCR or DVD player — attached to the television. Klipsch F-20

The Klipsch F-20 is one of three floorstanding tower speakers released as additions to the Synergy Series in August 2010. All models in the series incorporate proprietary Tractrix Horn technology, which uses linear travel suspension and aluminum diaphragm compression drivers to reduce distortion and ensure crystal-clear frequencies. As an upgrade from the F-10, the F-20 sports dual 6.5” rigid and lightweight, as well as magnetically shielded IMG woofers. This helps the speaker produce more lifelike, non-fatiguing music that’s louder but less distorted. Also included is a 1” high-frequency tweeter mated to a 90-by-60-degree horn. Altogether the components still handle 400W of power, but they do it across a wider 38Hz-23kHz frequency range.

B&W VM1

The B&W VM1 is a high-end 100-watt satellite speaker that can be used in set of two or more speakers for a home theater sound system. The “V” in VM1 stands for “versatile” according to B&W, which describes the speakers’ ability to be used in portrait or landscape mode. The VM1 is also flexible in the sense that it can be used on a pedestal stand or mounted to a wall. The VM1 itself features a slim design with clean aesthetics. This speaker has a significant low-frequency response, rated at +/-3dB of 75Hz. It is widely agreed upon that this speaker has excellent sound quality, defined by substantial body and distinguishable bass, even without using a subwoofer. Since release, the VM1 (2002) has been succeeded by the similarly featured VM6 (2007), which means the former can be found for a significantly lower price than the latter’s MSRP. The Paradigm Monitor 7 v.5 are floorstanding speakers as part of the v.5 Monitor series of speakers. This v.5 lineup began appearing in Canadian and US dealers in November of 2006, and while Paradigm pricing is guarded, these speakers have been selling between $550 and $800 for a pair in both the United States and Canada. The Monitor 7s are 2 1/2-way speakers with 4-drivers. The high-frequency driver is a 25-mm (1 in) H-PTD ferro-fluid cooled dome tweeter; it features a single 5 1/2" mid-range/bass M-ICP cone, and 2 x 5 1/2" polypropylene dedicated bass drivers. The Harman Kardon HKTS-15 is a 5.1 channel home theater speaker system comprised of 4 satellite speakers, 1 center channel speaker and 1 subwoofer. The Infinity Primus P362 (supercedes the P360) is a 3-way floor-standing speaker at the top of Infinity's Primus line of speakers. The Primus line is given a "value" or "step-up" designation by Infinity in terms of cost. Above Primus is the Classia and Cascade series and below are the Total Solutions series of speakers. The Infinity Primus P360 has been updated and now is referred to as the Infinity Primus P362, with only minor cosmetic changes over the 360 version. The JVC SXXSW6000 is an extremely affordable 5.1 surround sound speaker system coming in at well under $100 (as low as $50). The system comprises of a powered subwoofer and five satellite speakers. The 12" high subwoofer contains a 6.5" woofer, an amp rated at 100-watts and volume knob. The rear-ported enclosure has a black woodgrain finish and a grill cloth made from acoustically transparent fabric stretched over a curved frame. The five satllite speakers feature a 2" x 3.5" asymmetrical driver that is enclosed in a 4-3/8" plastic enclosure. There is a built in crossover in each speaker so that they only handle the mid/high frequencies leaving the subwoofer to handle the lows. It should be noted that these speakers require to be plugged into a power amplifier and cannot be simply plugged into a computer or other device. Klipsch RF-52

Klipsch RF-52 are 2-way floorstanding speakers in the lower half of the Klipsch Reference Series. They feature a 1" titanium tweeter for high frequencies situated behind, what Klipsch calls, a Tractrix horn and dual 5.25" mid/bass driver made of a composite ceramic and copper material that Klipsch calls Cerametallic. The 2-way crossover is set at 1900 Hz, and the speaker has reported frequency response of 34Hz to 23kHz (+/-3dB). They feature a rear-firing port to eliminate vibration and use magnetically attached grilles. The RF-52 speakers are sold individual for around $300 each or ($600 / pair) and are only available in a black woograin vinyl finish. They were first produced in 2006. The next model up is the Klipsch RF-62 ($400 / each) and the step-down model is the Klipsch RF-10 ($250 / each) with similar design, but with 6.5" and 4.5" mid-range drivers, respectively.

JBL Control One

The JBL Control One is a specialized bookshelf speaker released as a downgrade from the Control Monitor. Designed to be used as front or surround speakers in an at-home theater, the Control One (sold in a pair) hosts a two-way configuration with a 4” woofer and a ½” titanium laminate tweeter. Together they handle 200W of energy across a much narrower 50Hz-20kHz frequency range. Like its superior siblings, the Control One bookshelf speakers are also magnetically shielded. Surprisingly, the Control One has received much better praise, perhaps due to its smaller size. Regardless, there is a tendency for the highs to be over-pronounced. Plus the bass is lacking.

The speaker is more narrow and compact than B&W's 803S and is designed with a curved cabinet that includes Matrix interlocking bracing for rigidness and stands on a heavy cast aluminum plinth. The Boston Acoustics VS 260 is a 2-way bookshelf speaker that sports a 6.5” OCCM subwoofer and a 1” super wide bandwidth tweeter. The second speaker in the Boston Acoustics VS series, the VS 260 is in fact an upgrade from the VS 240. It offers a larger subwoofer (6.5” versus 4.5”), a superior frequency response (45Hz-30kHz versus 70Hz-30kHz), a greater sensitivity (87dB versus 86dB), and a reduced crossover frequency (1900Hz versus 2000Hz). Much like its predecessor, the VS 260 also competes with its weaker competitors from the Boston Acoustics HS series. The B&W 684 is the smaller of two floorstanding main speakers in Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) affordable high-end 600 series of home audio speakers. These speakers are ideal for a hi-fi or home cinema system in a medium to large sized room. There is a pair of 6.5" woven Kevlar cones; the lower of the two is dedicated to bass frequencies which frees the upper bass/midrange cone to handle the midrange frequencies with a crisper and clearer response that you might expect from a smaller cone. The JBL Studio 190 are floorstanding speakers that are part of a line of home theater speakers called Studio 1. Announced in the fall of 2010, they also include a center channel, side channel bookshelf speakers and another set of towers like these that use only one woofer per channel called Studio 180. These have dual 6.5" woofers with PolyPlas cones and rubber surrounds in each tower, as well as 4" PolyPlas mid-range cones and 1" CMMD Lite dome tweeters. Paradigm Studio 100 are the flagship model of Paradigm's Studio lineup of high-end speakers. At $2200 / pair, they are expensive, but offer considerable savings over comparable quality speakers. The B&W HTM61 is the larger of two center channels available in Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) affordable high-end 600 series of home audio speakers. This speaker is designed to compliment either the 684 or 683 floorstanding speakers for home theatre sytems in medium to large sized rooms. There is a 6.5" woven Kevlar cone for bass, and a 6" woven Kevlar cone for midrange frequencies, which feature a fixed centre bullet that helps smooth the response into upper frequencies. The 6" midrange cone also features FST technology, which essentially uses a foam ring allowing the cone to float freely for an improved cone response. Between these two speakers is a 1" aluminum dome tweeter, which handles all high frequencies. The tweeter is contained in a Nautilus tapering tube, which is designed to only project sound through a hollow pole magnet frontwards, and is tapered towards the rear to eliminate reflections off the rear of the cabinet producing unwanted sound effects. Unlike standard center channels which need to be placed horizontally under a monitor, this model can be placed horizontally or vertically if space is limited. The B&W 803S is a 3-way floorstanding loudspeaker from B&W's high end 800 Series that handles up to 250 watts of power.
