Sprint Overdrive

$50.00 Released January, 2010

Product Shot 1 The Pros: connects over next generation WiMAX (4G) or EV-DO (3G) in places it isn't available. Mobile - extremely compact and lightweight, fits into the palm of your hand. 100-foot WiFi range.

The Cons:Expensive data plans. Low speed and restrictive bandwidth caps compared to a wired connection. VPN connections do not work with this device. Sprint just confirmed this with me and they have no idea why.

The Sprint Overdrive is an affordable network interface new from Sprint in 2010. This 3G/4G mobile hotspot can broadcast a WiFi signal (through WiMAX or EVDO) to up to five devices at once, with no crawling.

The Sprint Overdrive is able to upload videos to YouTube, even when all five bandwidth spots are being used. However, the upload speed of the Overdrive is suprisingly slow (.8mbps), especially considering the otherwise well-performing bandwidth. For those who are worried about getting a network interface going out of the box, the Overdrive boasts an easy set-up. There are network interface improvements here, like the bandwidth speed (4mbps) and an LCD screen that displays signal strength, battery level, connection type and Overdrive password. According to expert reviewers, the Sprint Overdrive stacks up well against the Novatel MiFi, Verizon's mobile hotspot device offering.
