The Athena AS-P4100 is a sub-woofer with a 10" downward facing driver powered by a 100 W amplifier with a peak power rating of 400 W. It has dual vented ports: one facing downward, and the other facing outward. It has a variable low-pass cut-off point set between 40 - 120 Hz and the sub-woofer itself has a reported frequency response of 23 - 120 Hz (+/- 3 dB). "Yamaha's YST-SW315 is a very solid performer, with a sound that is full and strong, yet very accurate. The YST-SW315 features a substantial 270-watt amplifier powering a ten-inch driver, and it can easily be adjusted for movie or music playback. Paradigm DSP-3400

The Paradigm DSP-3400 is the third subwoofer in the DSP Series and an immediate step up from the DSP-3200. It hosts larger 14” Carbon/Aramid-Fiber Polypropylene cones, which allows for an improved frequency extension down to 19Hz, which in turn allows for a tighter and clearer bass response. Like its predecessor, it relies on an integrated Class D Amplifier to provide a 900W maximum power output. Note that the unit is almost 65 pounds and therefore can be difficult to carry. Some problems include no on-board provisions for connecting a second woofer, no wireless remote capability, and no way to save separate settings for Music/Movie use.

B&W AS2

The B&W AS2 is another member of the B&W line of subwoofers designed to go with their surround sound systems. Unlike the AS1, the AS2 comes with a 10 inch mica cone driver which is stiff enough to stand against the strength of dynamic bass signals. The subwoofer is built with the B&W Bass Overload Supression System circuitry in an attempt to prevent any distortion effects from a loud signal overloading the subwoofer. The Paradigm UltraCube 12 is a mid-grade sub-woofer designed to be used in a high definition home theater environment. The Polk Audio CSW100 is a 10" subwoofer from Polk Audio's CSW Series. The Key to Uncompromising Sound Is Giving Choices The VTF-3 is the more powerful 12 inch cousin of our well received VTF-2. For those that have larger rooms or who demand more from their subwoofers, this puppy packs a 350 Watt punch and maximum extension down to 20 Hz. For longer life, the woofer has a rubber surround and poly-cotton spider. The poly-cotton spider is about 10 times as wear resistant as a standard cotton spider.

All subwoofer designs, especially low cost subwoofers, involve tradeoffs in design. You cannot have a small subwoofer that goes very low, plays very loud and costs very little. Traditionally, the engineer decides what tradeoff he or she thinks is best for the consumer. The consumer has to take it or leave it.

The VTF series changes all that. It allows you, the user, to choose the tradeoff. If you enjoy music that is loud but does not have much deep bass, set the VTF series for max output. That way, you get maximum dynamic range with the lowest distortion. If you like music with deep bass, set it for maximum bass extension to reproduce the deep bass accurately. You can even switch between the two modes depending on what you play. That means effectively you get a subwoofer that can play loudly, and can play low, all in one, at one low price!

Additionally, the PS210's phase switch allows for manual tweaking of phase settings for a more customized sound.
