The energy drink crazy has spilled over to a seemingly unlikely market: sunflower seeds. Dakota Valley Products, Inc. has come up with patent-pending method of infusing the energy ingredients typically found in Red Bull and other energy drinks into sunflower seeds. Sumseeds are roasted sunflowers seeds "super-charged" with caffeine, taurine, lysene, and ginseng. Each 3.5 oz (100 g) bag contains approximately 120 mg of caffeine, similar to a strong cup of coffee.

More information

"Sumseeds is a true energy food," says Dakota Valley Products President, Tim Walter. "We start with the nutritional power of a natural sunflower seed -- natural protein, thiamine, vitamin E, iron, phosphorous, potassium and calcium. Then, we add the energy -- caffeine, taurine, lysine and ginseng. There is nothing like Sumseeds on the market today!"

They are marketed to an ecclectic group of "high-energy consumers", likely involved in sports, technology, hunting, fishing, and long-haul trucking. The manufacturer claims that Sumseeds are made from higher quality sunflower seeds than their "normal" sunflower seed competitors using a patented method of separating the bad seeds.

Sumseeds are distributed by Earth Seeds, LLC and come in 12 bag cases available for $25 (plus $5 shipping) from sumseeds.com.

Surprisingly, I only find this "somewhat ridiculous" on the scale from 1-to-"completely ridiculous". Maybe it's my caffeine addiction talking.

I love how their target market includes athletes, techies, and long-haul truckers. Finally, a common ground between these long divided demographics.

John from The Runway Company sent me some samples of Sumseeds: Original, Dill Pickle, Salt & Pepper, and Honey BBQ. I was pretty pumped when they arrived via UPS yesterday.

I tried the Dill Pickle last night while watching one of my favourite TV shows (The Biggest Loser, I know that's lame). In terms of flavour, the seeds were high quality without many "duds" or rotten ones or anything like that. After eating about a quarter of a bag I started noticing that the coating was gummier than normal sunflower seeds. Not a big deal, but worth pointing out.

The one thing about sunflower seeds is that they're addictive, and throw in caffeine and taurine and they become even MORE addictive. I hard a difficult time putting them down.

In terms of energy, I think packed little bit of a punch, but nothing significant. The packaging was funny, though. Thumbs up!
