Supernova One

The Supernova One made by dnp denmark is a screen designed to be used with front projectors that works even in brightly lit environments. The screen itself is made from a special material that absorbs incident light from stray angles, and reflects lights more prominently on-axis. Typically, to effectively view a front projector display setup, you need a light-controlled environment like a dimly lit boardroom, or a darkened home theater room. The Supernova One will provide decent contrast ratios, brightness, and black levels even in a well-lit room. The manufacturer claims 10X the contrast ratio, and 2X the brightness in normal light conditions (around 500 Lux) over traditional screens. Actual testing courtesy of UltimateAVmag.com, has strengthened these claims but with slightly different results with a 4X increase in contrast ratio, and a 2X brightness in a lit room compared to a reference screen.

Technology

The technology works on the premise that the light from the projector source will be coming from an on-axis angle, whereas incident light will be hitting the screen from all angles. To effectively increase the contrast ratio and brightness, the screen absorbs light from off-axis angles and reflects light on-axis, reducing the reflection of ambient light without losing any light cast by the front projector resulting in a brighter, and higher contrast viewing experience in lit environments. The trade-off, however, comes at the cost of viewing angle. The picture will be noticeably dimmer when viewing from off-axis angles, and will even demonstrate a hot-spot in the center of the screen as you compare to edge.

dnp gives you the choice of two screen materials: 1) 20-20, an ultra-high contrast material with poor viewing angles, and 2) 08-85, a high-contrast material with acceptable viewing from +/- 85 degrees off-axis.

Applications

The two most common applications of the Supernova would likely be in an office setting in a lit boardroom or when used in a home theater (or living room) where viewing is often done in brightly lit conditions. In either case, the added benefit of the Supernova One decreases as the room is darkened to low light levels, and so it does not produce a better picture in the dark over a typical screen. For example, a scenario where the Supernova could be used is as a main viewing screen in a living room used for both TV and movies. Typically, you can't have a screen larger than around 65" in a well-lit main living area, but the Supernova extends this limit to up to 120".

Availability and Pricing

The Supernova One is available in screen sizes ranging from 72" to 120" in both 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Each of these screens are available with silver, black aluminum or black velvet screen frames. Pricing information is difficult to find, but reviews have suggested that an 84" 16:9 Supernova One with a wall-mount costs $2109. These screens are available from high-end home theater resellers.

This screen makes it possible to get very large screens in main living areas. It may seem very expensive, but try pricing out a 65" plasma and comparing that to an 84" Supernova One ($2100) with an Epson Powerlite 1080 UB ($2700).
