The Conduit

The Conduit is a first-person shooter in the style of Halo, Medal of Honor Heroes 2 or Resistance: Fall of Man – basically, fast, run-and-gun battles and stylized weapons.  The game is developed by High Voltage Software and is published by Sega, to be released in NA in June 2009. This game is one of the very few games in the WII platform to be original and not conservative, in contrast to most of the Nintendo Wii non-sport games.  It takes place during present day. Washington D.C. finds itself the epicenter of an extraterrestrial attack and it's up to gamers, as the secret service's Agent Ford, to discover the truth hidden behind the invasion. To do that, he'll need a variety of guns and the skills to use them. This game tries to make the most out of the Nintendo Wii hardware by utilizing the Quantom 3 engine, an engine built by High Voltage exclusively for the Wii platform. The engine allows effects such as bump mapping (more detailed surface representation that more closely resembles the details inherent in the natural world), reflection and refraction, gloss and detail mapping.  Such features are usually associated with stronger game consoles such as the Play Station 3 and the Xbox 360. The game also focuses on powerful artificial intelligence.

I've been following the development of The Conduit with curiosity specifically because it's achieved a Killzone 2 -esq cult fanbase that want to use it as an example of Wii's controls used for a hardcore FPS title. Ever the Wii skeptic I've been reading a lot of reviews and viewed a lot of videos on how it plays. Thus far: totally unimpressed.

It's a total rip-off of Halo 1 with some different environments. The enemies look almost exactly the same, and the weapons are the archetypal "Humans" and "Aliens" dichotomy. I think when Wii fans wanted a Wii Halo, they didn't mean it so literally. In that regard, if you haven't played a decent FPS title that was developed in the last 5 years, then The Conduit should be a satisfying run. However, anybody that's played a modern Call of Duty or Halo on an HD system will have to REALLY love the controls to overcome the obvious retread of the same old and archaic designs.

I'm sure some Wii-only fans will derive enjoyment out of the title, but I can conclusively say this game ain't for me.
