When Did All the Interesting Parts of You Die?

I love this movie.

I do have to admit that I have a very large and soft spot for coming of age movies.  Same goes for movies from Britain, this film originates out of Australia so it's close enough.  Despite my affinity for the genre and country of origin, this is a fantastic film in its own right.

Witty dialogue, engaging characters, a unique and smart storyline, great acting, great music - this movie has it all.  The real highlight of the film is in the characters and writing.  Every one of the people portrayed in the movie is multi-dimensional, likeable and detestable at the same time, each offering a host of quality quotes.

My favourite one has to be Placid's boss Joel at the insurance company.  He starts off so friendly and gung-ho about corporate life but right away you can tell that there's something beneath the enthusiastic exterior.  And as Placid is integrated into the working world we learn more about Joel, and the problems with his life as Placid finds problems with being normal in general.

The overly absurd situations that Placid gets himself into make identifying with his persona rather difficult, but the entire time we're rooting for him and can't wait to see where it all ends up.  Fortunately, the story concludes in a satisfying manner without being forced or hammy.

A great film through and through, highly recommended.
