Do "you" deserve the title of Person of the Year?

Time magazine has announced that its "Person of the Year" is You. Congratulations! This annual designation is to the person who "for better or worse, has most influenced events in the preceding year". [more]

I may have been hasty in congratulating you as a person of the year. What they really mean by "you" are the 1% of you that are passionate contributors to the web ecosphere: bloggers, Wikipedians, open-source programmers, and amateur YouTube video producer. What motivates you? I don't really know, but it has something to do with creating meaning, and the sense of belonging.

New technologies, made possible by the Internet, have enabled this small demographic to make a big difference by creating a framework to have your voice heard. This wasn't possible 5 years ago, but now that it is, how does it change society? And what about this guy?

The great thing about this new world is that the rest of us benefit from the contributions of the few. I mean few in a relative 1% way, because 1% of 300 million is still a very large number. There seems to be an endless amount of great user-generated content pouring out from all corners of the globe.

I think that this is fantastic. Here is what some others have said. What do you think?

I never really considered myself to be on the same level as "the dude" so i guess i have to say that it's an honor. There were soldiers that were in Iraq or Afghanistan for the entire year and they chose me because I kept my myspace profile up to date. I'm speechless.

Don't be so humble. Creating endless Star Wars kid or "Milk and Cereal" remixes has to count for something.
