TomTom is a GPS navigation app for the iPhone 3G or 3GS. This application utilizes the GPS positioning system built into the iPhone and is capable of giving users turn-by-turn directions throughout North America. The TomTom app works in both landscape and portrait mode, and will read aloud driving directions as you go. However, this app lacks text-to-speech, meaning it does not read street names or numbers. Both 2D and 3D maps can be displayed, along with “IQ Routes” which provide the user with the best route according to data provided by other TomTom users. This application also gives drivers direct access to contacts already saved in the iPhone’s address book. The TomTom app uses battery power rather quickly, so it is generally recommended to use an in-car charger as well. The TomTom app is a 1.21 GB download, and can be purchased for $99.99 through the iTunes Store.

Pros
- Only current GPS app with Text-to-Speech
- Lane Assist feature ensures you are in the right lane for tricky/confusing highway/freeway exits
- very aesthetically appealing user interface
Cons
- No overall route view - cannot see a full rundown list of all your turns (ie. like in google maps)
- Destroys battery life, should really only be used with a car charger otherwise you run the risk of completely draining your phone on long trips.
- App does not support online content such as live traffic updates for route planning

Pros
Did not agree with any pros
Cons
- Expensive for an app
- Will stop navigation when user switches to another application (iPhone OS still lacks multitasking!). GPS fix has to be re-aquired when switching back to navigation. Not TomTom's fault, but anyway, consider this.
