The Toshiba XD-E500 is an up-converting DVD player from Toshiba. While recently released, the XD-E500 is not revolutionary, with no support for high definition HD-DVD or Blu-ray discs. Instead, this regular DVD player up-converts regular DVD-quality 480p, creating a full 1080p signal that appears better on high definition screens. This unit features the same upconverting processor as Toshiba's other high-end upconverting player, the SD-6100, with the addition of the "XDE" post-processing engine. This extra processing chip performs three main enhancements to: sharpness, color and contrast. There are 4 different picture modes available, though it seems that not all three enhancements can be active at the same time.
