Teac CR-H238i

The CR-H238i is a stereo receiver also referred to as a micro system that is part of Teac's Reference series and set for a fourth quarter 2010 release. Like the CR-H500NT it is an all in one unit with built in CD player, AM/FM tuner, USB port and iPod connectivity, although much cheaper since it does not have the wifi/ethernet, phono input or iPod Digital Direct USB port. It does however have an SD card slot conveniently located on the front along with the USB port, both of which may be used to play music in MP3 or WMA format. On the rear panel can be found the iPod port, along with two stereo pairs of auxiliary inputs and one pair of outputs all on RCA connectors. Digital audio output is provided by the optical out, allowing you to bypass the analog RCA outputs, and video through is possible when streaming from an iPod and using the optional Teac DS-20 iPod dock as it has both Video and S-Video outputs. Since this is a newly released product at the time of writing, information is not yet available regarding the use of a USB stick for recording like the tuner mentioned above, although the specs do indicate audio encoding when using the USB port.

Teac AG-H380

The AG-H380 is a tuner/stereo receiver that is part of Teac's 2010 Reference series. Like the CD player/wifi receiver CR-H500NT it also has an iPod Digital Direct USB port, although in this case on back. This let's you stream 24bit/192kHz audio without an iPod dock, using the internal audio conversion of the Teac. It may also be used to record straight onto USB stick from either the internal AM/FM tuner, phono preamp input, CD input, or any device hooked up to one of the two sets of auxiliary RCA inputs. Extra features include two sets of AC power sockets on the rear, remote control and external antenna. The tuner section holds 30 AM and 30 FM stations in memory, and there are bass and treble controls as well as a CD Direct function allowing for a direct signal from the CD input, bypassing the internal controls. The amp section delivers 40 watts per channel at 6 ohms and a subwoofer output is included on 1/4" phone jack. Weighing in at 9.7 pounds, this is one of the lighter models in the series, although substantial at that as it is made with the same resonance free anodized aluminum casing.

The NAD M4 is a ‘Master Series’ analogue digital tuner that supports FM, AM, and DAB Digital Radio. Featured are 40 presets, a single analogue output, two digital outputs for the DAB, and basic home automation controls like RS-232. Some of the more coveted components include a shielded multi-stage MOSFET RF with fine-tuning in .0125 MHz steps for avoiding pirate radio stations; a crystal-controlled, synthesized phase lock loop with an IF counter for VCO tuning; and a two-stage loop filter for PLL output. The result is clear radio reception with minimal distortion, no impedance, and superior channel separation. Obviously the DAB performs the best, though the FM and AM functionalities have been hailed as above par as well. Nevertheless, critics are adamant in their belief that there are better-quality tuners available in this price-range.

It features a high-grade, quartz PLL-synthesized for high quality radio transmissions. Included are 30 AM and 30 FM presets, an optional rack mount kit, and an included remote for convenient operation. Plus the unit offers digital clock functionality. Overall users say the Teac T-R680RS performs exceptionally well. However, it can be difficult to initially setup. And it’s important to remember that this unit is a tuner, and not a receiver/tuner.
