The power switch to the motor should not be on or connected. You should NEVER run the batteries all the way down, if they're sealed lead acid type, which I believe they are. These types of batteries don't "like" when you do that, and doing so will drastically shorten their life. Charging the first time could take 14-16hrs.; possibly 24 hrs. I'm surprised the directions don't tell you this.
