Step chests are a centuries old design from Japan. These were originally devised as a clever way to hide a loft space from taxation by quickly switching from stairs to an unassuming cabinet when an inspector showed up.

The TV Step is a contemporary adaptation that functions as a TV cabinet. The main section has hide away doors to best see the TV. The drawers in the piece are a good size for storing DVDs and other media.

The TV Step is also double sided, so it can act as a room divider or be placed in other places where both sides can be accessed.

Is it symmetrical? Can you flip it around and have the TV on the other side?

not quite - the other side has sliding doors instead of pocket doors. If you go to the fourth slide in the flash you can see the back. Would be pretty difficult to build in both sides having hide away doors I'd think. I'll probably ask about that, as they do custom made versions of many of the pieces on request.

Also you can take the top set of steps down and put it on the other side so its 3 steps up, then 3 steps down again on the other side instead of the one way straight up. Not the clearest of descriptions but I imagine not too hard to figure out. It's three modular pieces

I see, that makes sense. You can set it up in several different ways because its modular.

yeah - in Tokugawa era Japan they would get taxed on levels of a house. So they'd flip the top steps upside down on top of the bottom steps and it would be a regular looking rectangular chest.

But most houses in America already have stairs, so it doesn't really do you much good. But it's still pretty cool.

Well its also not up to firecode regulations as far as being a main stairway to a loft area... its appealing as a cool design and a piece of history. Wouldnt want a wooden cabinet being your only stairs down in a fire @_@
