The HFI-780 are one of Ultrasone's more popular pair of headphones. They can be had for a pretty good price and have very nice performance. The bass is a little out of control and the highs can be slightly piercing at first, but this will settle quite a bit once they are burned in. They have a nice and sturdy build quality, especially considering they are a folding design, which makes them quite a nice choice for a portable setup. These really start to show their potential through modification though. A recable and slight tuning of the chamber yield fantastic results and really turn these into top notch headphones. Modified, they have even been compared to the high end Edition 9s (also by Ultrasone), which cost about $1,500.

Pros
- classy old-school aesthetic
- closed design - isolates listener from a lot of outside noise
- quality materials - sheep's leather pads, metal build
Cons
- B&W is not a known quality headphone manufacturer
- hardly portable - large, non-folding
- will be expensive
Ultrasone HFI-780

Bowers & Wilkins P5
MSRP $200.00
Released March, 2009
Pros
- slightly darker than lower grado headphone models, easier to listen to
- the most high end Grado that maintains the light plastic shell
- one of the best from a price:performance ratio - SR325 is $100 (50%) more, SR125 is not well regarded
Cons
- some believe a lesser Grado can be transformed to approach the refined sound of the 225 by implementing modifications (replacing grill, adding dampening to the back of the driver etc...)
- open design and thick cable are only good for quiet at home listening - cannot be easily thrown in a bag
- potential comfort issues - takes a while to get used to
