Marvel vs Capcom 3 (PS3, 360) – Damn you Capcom. Damn you to hell. First you get me addicted to Street Fighter 4. Then a year later I neglect my gaming backlog for Super Street Fighter 4. And now I know that when MvC3 comes out in early 2011 every other game I own is going to fall by the wayside. It’s already begun! I’ve already played MvC3 more than any other game on the show floor, and it’s just so damn good.
Ed Boon better release Mortal Kombat a good distance away from MvC3, because once the game comes out it’s going to take over the fighting game crowd. I think it’s going to be huge.
I honestly can’t wait.
Vanquish (PS3, 360) – this game is by Shinji Mikami the man behind major franchises such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. I don’t know if Vanquish will reach the same classic cult status, but it actually has a shot. This game is sick. You can think of it like a cross between Lost Planet, Ninja Gaiden, and Gears of War. It has the atmosphere, art style, and crazy explosions as Lost Planet. The cover based third person shooting of Gears of War. And it’s all wrapped up in a super intense high velocity action package that never lets up and lets you pull off amazing manoeuvres, just like Ninja Gaiden. I can already tell that – barring any major stupid design decisions - it’s going to be one of my favourite games of the generation.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3, 360) – I did not have fun with this at all. I think it’s going to be a big flop. It looks like a mess. Plays like a mess. And other than the Castlevania name has nothing really going for it. I was actually looking forward to this game, so big disappointment.
LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3) – I’ve always loved the concept of this game. The fact that they’re completely exploding the functionality so that you can make essentially any type of game is pretty damn amazing. Considering what people made in the first LBP, I think you’re going to see some absolutely wonderful stuff with LBP2. And my hope is that they’ve sorted out the searching capabilities so you don’t have to wade through 50 crappy levels/games just to get to that one awesome one. From a playing perspective I still felt the extremely floaty, semi-detached controls. It’s just not responsive like a Mario game and that absolutely kills it for me. I just don’t feel connected to my character when running and jumping, and it makes for a very frustrating experience. I’m surprised they didn’t sort this out for the sequel, very disappointing.
Medal of Honor (PS3, 360) - played the multiplayer for a bit and it felt like a looser less refined version of Modern Warfare 2. Maybe it's the fact that I'm not used to the PS3's controllers, or the code is still in an early state BUT I just didn't like the feel for the game. It's very similar to MW2, but it's reached some uncanny valley territory where it's pretty close, but not close enough. What happens if you start focusing on all of the ways the game is different, and frankly inferior to MW2. After 5-10 minutes I just had the feeling that I'd much rather be playing MW2.
