The NPD group has released the numbers for video game sales in the United States for May 2007. In May Nintendo is the big winner with 4 out of the top 10 software titles being sold, including the number 1 title. And taking the top two spots for hardware. What about the Gameboy Advance? Is it still fighting for its life? Anyway Sony needs to do a two part plan this September if they hope to sell a decent amount of PS3's, enough to make Square Enix happy with the outcome of Final Fantasy XIII, otherwise Square Enix will port it to the 360 or they will make all future releases multi-platform. This September Sony should cut the price by as much as possible. $100 minimum. With the triple Sony threat of Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, and Warhawk coming this September and Socom and Drake's Fortune and MGS4, come out this year, people will feel inclined to buy it. Heck they could even cut the price in August and have Lair to help them.

Added more numbers that were released overnight. If the GBA is fighting for its life then what's the PS3 doing :P Actually, last month the GBA outsold the PS3, so it's quite a tight battle. The PS3 is going to need a lot more than a $100 price drop to start competing with the 360 let alone the Wii. Heck, the 360 needs a price drop as well, and it's $200 cheaper than the PS3! However, the market now is different. If these HD consoles are targetting a 10 year life cycle, do they really need 300K sales right now? I mean, sure it would be nice, but is it necessary? I think that as long as the publishers are happy, and they definitely are on the 360's side, then the unit sales don't mean too much. And as long as the 360 is doing well, then the PS3 will benefit as well since it's a small marginal cost to go multiplatform. But man.. the PS3 is doing pretty horribly. Its trending beneath the Gamecube worldwide right now!

Yeah Sony is in a dilenma, publishers don't want to release exclusives for it since it has a low userbase, but people won't buy it if we don't have the exclusives. About the price drop $100 would help somewhat, I saw a poll and about 50,000 people were polled. The poll was if the price was dropped to $500 would you buy it. 70% said yes, 20% said if there was a must-have game out, 5% Still to expensive, 5% said Not a chance in hell, even if the price was $100. But anyway the PS2 is still outselling the 360, yeah it's outselling the PS3 even more, but it's good it's outselling them. Whoever purchases the PS2 is unlikely to purchase a PS3 or Xbox 360 THIS year. So when they decide to upgrade the PS3 will be in a stronger position, cheaper, broad games selection, and some games won't be possible on the Xbox 360 thanks to Blu-Ray and the CPU. However when they play it this year they will get into Sony's exclusive franchises: The Getaway, God of War, Gran Turismo, Hot Shots Golf, Jak and Daxter, Killzone, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, Singstar, Sly Cooper, SOCOM, and Twisted Metal to name a few. Plus if Konami and Square Enix remain loyal we will have MGS4 and FFXIII. They will want to continue playing those games. That is a huge factor for Sony. Most of what Nintendo has are E rated kid friendly minigames while all Microsoft has are mostly dozens of M rated FPS.

Backwards compatibility is a very big bonus that the PS3 has over the competition, especially when you consider how extensive and deep the libraries of the PS2 and PS1 actually are. And you're right that people buying a PS2 today won't be buying a next-gen console until 2012... if ever. However, Sony can't wait that long. If the PS3 has shriveled away to nothing then nobody will buy it, even former PS2 owners. I obviously doubt that the PS3 will die, but relatively speaking it's doing shockingly horrible. If publishers/developers don't see a return on their investment on the PS3 this year and in the holiday season, then you're going to start seeing announcements of PS3 versions being delayed, and then cancelled. And that's when the PS3 will be in SERIOUS trouble.

I know it's like you said in one of your articles, Sony can't survive on first party titles. Though they do have a nice handful of skilled second party developers that have either signed exclusive contracts or are extremely loyal to Sony such as Insomniac Games, Guerrilla Games, and Factor 5. The best thing that can happen for Sony is that the Wii will turn out to be a fad. Alot of people are saying it is, but that's what they said about Pokemon and the DS as well. Alot of people that own Wii say that the Wii is boring after a month, and I have to agree with them. I have both and I prefer the PS3. So my Wii is collecting the dust my PS3 churns up until Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is out for Wii next week. I thought it could be cool if EA did it right with the Wii Remote=Wand. But yeah I haven't touched my Wii since I finished Zelda at the end of April. I was excited about Mario Party 8 but it turned out to be a bummer so I didn't get it. Paper Mario isn't my thing and I'm not a fan of those M games like Resident Evil coming out on Wii.

I think it's too early to call Wii a fad, as there's definitely SOMETHING to it, but for long term success I think they do need more. Wii Sports is amazing, and really, that's enough for most people. However, there's just a numbers game happening. Since Wii right now is so party oriented you're always playing with people. However, how many people do you need in your circle of friends to have a Wii? Maybe 1 for every 5 people? Maybe more, maybe less? But the Wii might be a victim of its own success. The party stuff is great, but there needs to be more compelling single player games that make people REALLY want one for themselves.

Well I don't know, fads usually go for about a year. But the problem with the Wii IS the party games, they are fun if you have friends over but if you don't there isn't much software to play. The Wii's upcoming releases need to be top of the class, especially Galaxies and Brawl, to keep intrest in the Wii and prevent it becoming a fad. ALL of Sony's titles this fall NEED to be MUST-HAVE if Sony wants to have a chance of picking up sales.

Agreed 100%. I think the only disagreement among analysts/fans/fanboys/etc, is just how likely those events are going to be, as there's no denying the current situation.
