Unlock Xbox - Greatest contest ever

Doritos is holding one of the coolest video game contests I've ever seen. Heck, one of the coolest contests period. It's Video Game Design 2.0. Contestants submit their game ideas and after a period of 6 months or so 5 finalists are chosen. The finalists then have their games made as playable betas with people voting on which game they should win. This winning game will then be turned into a full fledged Xbox Live Arcade game that will be available for 6 months.

Alongside having your idea being made into a real video game (made by real video game developers), you'll receive a big prize package including a home theater system with a 42" plasma, an Xbox 360 Elite, every Microsoft published game released in 2007, and the best thing of all 2000 Microsoft points!

Key dates

  • Submissions start June 21st
  • Submissions end June 29th
  • Maximum of 3 submissions per person
  • Finalists announced August 20th
  • Playables made October 29th
  • Overall winner announced November 19th

Submission Guidelines

  • Your submission must contain a written description of the game, in English, that's no more than 500 words long. (We want you to design a game, not write a book.)
  • You may include up to five (5) media files total to bring your idea to life. This includes up to three (3) picture files (.jpeg, .gif format ONLY) and/or up to 2 video/audio files (.mpg, .mp4, .mov, .flv, .avi, .wmv, .mp3, .wav format ONLY) that are each no more than 3MB in size.
  • Entries must be received by 11:59:59 pm CT on 7/29/07
  • Contestant must be 18 and living in the United States

My note

I actually have a pretty good idea for a game, but I'm in Canada so I can't submit one. If anybody wants to use my idea just let me know (soon I'd imagine!) and I'll tell it to you. And keep in mind that I used to work for Electronic Arts, so I know a little about making games.

Very cool. Xbox crowdsourcing. I'm with Omar. I have a good idea for a video game, but live in Canada.

Same thing here - in Canada. from the POV of the back end of this contest sounds like ti could fail miserably. So many companies try and generate hype though contests like this only to find that 95%+ of all the entries are utter crap and finding anything worth showing to the public as a success is unlikely. Anything worthwhile may be buried under so many bad submissions that they never see the light of day. Hope for the best though and the prizes are certainly enticing.
