US Video Game sales for August (via NPD)

Last month Nintendo shocked the industry by selling a ridiculous number of consoles for July. Well they've repeated the feat with August number's, once again the Wii cracks over 400K consoles in a 4-week month. That's over 100 THOUSAND Wii's sold per week. Nintendo takes a close second with the DS. August marked the start of the 360 price drop and sales rose by 100K units. The PS3... ya.

The key points to take away from software are the continued exceedingly strong sales of 360 games. Madden 360 sold almost a million units, with the PS2 version suffering a massive drop compared to last year indicating the audiences are migrating from PS2 to 360. Madden on the Wii sold worse than the Xbox (original Xbox) which doesn't send a strong signal to 3rd parties. If one of the top selling franchises in the United States does poorly on the Wii, then what chance do other franchises have?

Nothing surprising here, though the Xbox 360 sold more than I thought it would. But PLEASE people, stop buying Maior Party 8, that was such a bad game.

Though this is an interesting for third parties, the most popular console is also the one that doesn't have the consumers who strongly support third parties. But will third parties keep up exclusives for the Wii if they don't sale. I mean, it's kind of embarassing that the Xbox sold more than the Wii in copies of Madden. Still though, the Wii sales are astounding, but DS sales went down didn't they? But nonetheless DS sales were still excellent.

PS3: Nothing new here, Sony should do that new SKU $399 thing ASAP to keep up in sales though. PSP and PS2 did decent. Overall the PlayStation Brand did well with about 500,000 in hardware sales, but man, the Wii almost sold as much as the entire PS Brand!

Xbox 360: I see that Blue Dragon didn't make it, it kind of lost its fire in the U.S. But Bioshock, Madden, and Two World's (Which was only considered average) did a good job of pushing 360 sales.

Now the question for September is how many copies will Halo 3 sell on Day 1? I predict at least 3 Million. But I could easily imagine more.

PS3 sold less than the 360 again. Imagine that. But who needs either? Just get an iPod touch.
