Vizio JV50P Jive

The Vizio JV50P is a high-def Plasma television that attempts to make the home theater experience easier to setup with its integrated 5.1 audio system. At a 720p resolution, and a panel supplied by LG, the Vizio's picture quality is comparable to most mid-priced plasmas. Where the JV50P differentiates itself is by offering more features than the other offerings in this price. The biggest difference is the bundling of the wireless audio system, alongside other aspects such as flexible Picture-in-Picture options.

Features

  • 50 inch display at 1366x768 resolution (720p)
  • 15,000:1 contrast ratio
  • Bundled with 5.1 audio system
  • Integrated NTSC/ATSC/QAM tuner
  • DCDi de-interlacer by Faroudja

A/V Ports

  • 3 x HDMI 1.3 (with one stereo audio input for all)
  • 2 x Component
  • 2 x Composite
  • 1 x VGA
  • SPDIF optical audio IN, and OUT
  • Stereo audio out

The 5.1 audio system is achieved through a combination of the built-in speakers and a bundled set. Black bevel covers the side and top of the unit, while three silver speakers responsible for left, center and right audio channels take up the bottom. The subwoofer connects wirelessly to the television through a 5.8GHz frequency, but isn't totally wireless as the woofer must be plugged into an electrical outlet, and the two accompanying satellite speakers.

Using a combination of the integrated tuner capable of handling analog and digital signals, and any of the other input sources a large suite of multi-picture options are available. The standard picture-in-picture is found, along with the ability to run the two sources side by side which is equivalent to having two 25" televisions beside each other.

A full compliment of picture adjustments allow you to tweak the standard settings along with customizing the color temperature and other special features such as Highlight limiting. Image retention is a fear among many people about plasmas and Vizio includes a built-in "image cleaner" they claim removes any burned-in logos or gaming HUDs.

The whole point of this television is to let you buy the HDTV and get the accompanying 5.1 surround sound with no hassle. This removes the need for a separate audio receiver for many people. However many receivers now (Onkyo 605) contain video processing capabilities for things like upconversion. Most media players already do upconversion, but set top boxes don't. Therefore the vast majority of television comes in at standard definition, and the mediocre scaler of this Vizio doesn't lend itself well to SD content. A better scaler would do wonders to make this setup a very compelling option. Right now it's pretty darn good still.

It's a good price, and a decent offering for someone looking to save a little money on a receiver. ......However.... I remain VERY skeptical about the quality of these included surround speakers and subwoofer. Do yourself a favor, get the Onkyo TX-SR605 and a decent pair of Paradigm speakers and center channel for a little over $1000 and you'll have a fantastic sounding audio system that won't make your ears bleed.

I own this model. The picture is super, the price I paid was 1174.99 at Sears. my new home addition is on a slab, the wireless speakers are a super bonus and work particularly well for those who can't run wires under the floor etc. The speakers easily get over looked in the whole scheme but are a nice addition to a super TV! I use it w/ PS3 (HDMI shows 1080i), Wii, and HD receiver from DirecTV hr-21, all look great. Viewing Angle is excellent. I also hooked up a Vista PC, make sure you set the resolution to 16bit or you will get artifacts. Enjoy!

@needrays, you should set your PS3 to output at 720p resolution. Well it depends on what you're doing with it. Blu-Ray movies output at 1080i, and video games output at 720p, so if you're playing games more than movies then set it at 720p. I forget if you can set independent resolutions depending on the content, but I think some people were having issues with that.

I have an issue with the speakers - they crackle and pop. I've called Vizio about this three times - once they said it was a problem with Dish (it's not, because it's also with my blu ray) and the other two times they disconnected me 15 minutes into the call and never called me back even though they had my callback number.
