The Magellan Switch Up is Magellan's first venture into the GPS watch market. Along with it's lower priced sibling, the Magellan Switch, it's a GPS watch aimed at making your training session more interesting. The Switch Up can be used for multiple sports including running, cycling and swimming. The Switch Up has the standard GPS-enabled technologies you'd find on other GPS watches, including a highly sensitive GPS receiver and altimeter, marked locations and pacing.

A big difference between this watch and the older generation GPS watches is that it has basic navigation capabilities to help you get back to your starting point. This would work well if you're in a city or trail you've never run before, almost like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs a la Hansel & Gretel.

The multisport mode will be appealing to triathletes as it allows you to record muti-disciplinary workouts into one session and record your transition times. The 9 activity profiles allows you to customize settings for different sports as well. A multisport mounting kit is included into the price.

The watch only has an 8 hour battery life, although you can get an extra 16 hours through an external battery pack. The 8 hour battery life isn't much if you're planning on wearing this as your everyday watch.

The Garmin Forerunner 405 is a GPS watch designed to help runners train. This is similar to the Garmin Forerunner 305, but uses a more slim design for increased comfort and has a bezel touch control to quickly scroll through the options on the watch while on the move. While not included in the base model, the watch does use the ANT+ heart rate monitor and can use an optional foot pad for indoor training when a GPS won't help to track distance run. This watch is fully compatible with Garmin Connect, allowing wearers to upload information about their run for post analysis and comparison to past runs.

The Garmin Forerunner 910XT is the 25% thinner all black successor to the orange and gray Forerunner 310XT sports watch, and is set for release in November 2011. It maintains many features such as water resistance down to 164 feet (50 meters), GPS and adds many functions for either swimming, running or cycling. The auto multisport button switches modes instantly for easy transition between all three events and keeps track of your progress. This is Garmin's first multisport watch to use swim metrics which include stroke count, stroke identification, swim distance and pool lengths, while it is also their first to offer a barometric altimeter for more accurate than GPS elevation data like ascent, descent and grade when used while cycling. Other data that is calculated while running or cycling is heart rate, pace, power and distance. Casio PAW1300 Pathfinder

The Casio PAW1300 Pathfinder is a rugged watch meant for hiking and trekking in the woods, and offers the functionality to match. These include automatic time synchronization, solar powered, compass, altimeter and weather indicators such as barometer and thermometer.

The watch can synchronize with an atomic clock using its built-in radio receiver and time decoder. It can receive five different signals, depending on its location: one in the US (Fort Collins, Colorado), two in Japan, one in Germany, and one in the UK. Daylight savings time and Leap Years are also automatically adjusted for. If a radio signal is not available, then the watch reverts to its own internal timekeeping (like any other normal quartz watch).

Casio claims you'll never have to change batteries or charge the watch, as it uses the "Tough Solar" power system. The batteries are charged either from sunlight, or electrical lighting, with the light entering the watch through the face and dial hitting the solar cell underneath.

Compass functionality lets you determine your heading at any moment. When the compass is activated the main directions of North, South, East and West are indicated by markers. You can then record a particular direction, letting you store and display up to 5, to keep track of your relative direction.

Barometric (atmospheric pressure change) readings are recorded every two hours with the last 13 readings being stored. You can then graph the barometer readings over time to determine if any trends are emerging.

The altimeter checks and displays any changes in height every two minutes. Every 15 minutes the current altitude and temperature are stored. You can set target marks for altitudes, and the watch will alert you when your current altitude is reaching the target. The watch can record 40 sets of altitude/temperature/date information as an archive.

In hiking situations the lighting conditions can vary wildly including near total dark. Casio has included an electro-luminescent (EL) back light solution for the Pathfinder that increases brightness while not consuming too much power. The watch detects the lighting conditions, and can automatically turn on the back light when you tilt the watch to your face. This "auto light" functionality can be turned off.

The watch emits a beep whenever a button is pressed. However, this button alert tone can be deactivated.

The PAW1300 Pathfinder is available in three variations that contain all the same specifications and differ only in look.
