Google+ Plus

Google+ is the latest attempt by Google at social networking. Far more ambitious than the failed Buzz and Wave, Google+ aim to integrate a wide range of Google products into the network. These include Gmail, Picasa, and Google profiles; it is said to be the start of larger push of a range of Google social products.

The main feature that Google advertises is Circles, it enables users to easily group their friends into various circles and choose specifically who they want to share content to. This extensive content share control encompasses all your personal data on Google+. For example you can choose to let one group of friends see you occupation, whilst blocking them from seeing your contact information. Next up is Hangouts, it is designed specifically for group video chats for up to ten people, Google's programming allows the chat to automatically focus on one person when they are speaking. Sparks is more of a traditional Google feature in the sense that it is a web search that returns results based on your preferences.

With the Google+ mobile application users can also make use of a group messaging feature called huddle. It allows people to send out mass messages to specific circles. Many early adopters would have noticed the familiarity between Facebook and Google+ in terms of user interface where Google have taken many elements in terms on the positioning of information. All in all, Google+ is a well made social networking product with a clean and intuitive user interface. Its sharing control system (Circle) is a welcomed featured for those concerned with online privacy. Whether or not Google+ will be successful will depend on the people's willingness to adopt this new network.

Dead Frontier

IMPORTANT: Dead Frontier Online is currently BETA. This is a bare-bones version of the game, with many planned features missing. The estimate for a full scale release is now Summer 2008.

Because this is only a BETA there will likely be many bugs, crashes and other problems. There is also a 50% chance the entire user database will have to be wiped before full release. If this happens those who bought credits will have them restored to their new characters.

Dead Frontier is an action oriented MMORPG set in a post apocalyptic zombie infested world. Wielding a wide variety of firearms and melee weapons your task is simple, to survive in this zombie infested world. You begin by choosing your job, each of which start with unique stats or skills (Chefs can prepare foods that normal characters cannot for example). You must keep your character nourished and healthy while killing an army of undead in order to gain experience points. After leveling up you can allocate skill points between various attributes such as strength, reload speed, accuracy, melee profficiency, etc. As you increase your skills and attain better weaponry you can venture further into the massive city, where new dangers and rewards are waiting.

GMail (accessible at gmail.google.com) is Google's entry into the Web-based email market. They allow almost unlimited storage (6.8+ GB currently and growing at a rate of 3.35 MB / day). Not only a Web-based system, GMail supports POP3, IMAP, and push (via Exchange Server) access to the account for use in third-party e-mail applications like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird and your smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, Nokia, MS Mobile). GMail is available in a mobile version at gmail.com/app. It's initial release came March 21, 2004.

GMail Labs

Google launched a new tab called "Labs" accessible from all users' "Settings" tab in their GMail account on June 5th, 2008 at 6pm. They will use this area to test experimental GMail features, largely developed as part of Google's 20% time strategy in which engineer's are encouraged to spend one day per week working on projects outside of their job descriptions. Features in the lab will come and go at Google's description, and some may work they way out of the lab into the core GMail offering as is done with the traditional Google Labs program.

The current GMail Labs features are:

a module for quick links (saved searches, important messages)

superstars (additional star icons)

pictures in Gmail chat

fixed width font

custom keyboard shortcuts

mouse gestures

random signature

signature tweaks (places the signature before the quoted text)

custom date format

muzzle (hide the status of your contacts in Gmail chat)

play Snake inside Gmail

email addict (blocks the screen for 15 minutes)

hide unread count

Yahoo Mail

Yahoo! Mail (shortened to Y! Mail) is a free web mail provided by Yahoo!. It was inaugurated in 1997 and serves over 280 million users as of 2009. It is currently the largest web-based email service, followed closely by its competitor Windows Live Hotmail.

Currently, Yahoo! offers two versions of Yahoo! Mail: an Outlook-like Ajax interface powered by Yahoo!'s Zimbra ntroduced in 2007, as well as the traditional static-web-page "Yahoo! Mail Classic," which continues the availability of the simpler 1997-2006 interface for the brand's considerable installed base of users. In early 2008, Yahoo! started offering unlimited mail storage even to its non-paying users, in response to heated competition in the free-web mail market segment.

On June 27, 2009, Yahoo! Messenger was integrated with Yahoo! Mail Beta. This means that Messenger and Mail are together at one place, allowing to connect instantly with friends that are online, switch seamlessly between email and chat, with no download or setup required. This new feature is now available for Mail Classic.

Apple's iCloud is the company's version of cloud storage, essentially providing each iCloud user with a sort of virtual storage space for apps, music, photos, documents, email and calendars. iCloud users receive 5GB of free storage space when they sign up, with upgrades available at a cost. Wireless devices automatically upload photos, songs or other data to iCloud, which then distributes them to the user's other devices, wirelessly. Contacts, email and calendar details are automatically synchronized across devices. Indeed, iCloud's main feature is that it performs all of its functions automatically, eliminating any need for the user to manage files or manually share them wirelessly. iCloud is compatible with Apple wireless devices, Apple computers and PCs, and Apple TV. Photo streaming does not count towards using any of the free 5GB of storage included with an account. iCloud is included with iOS 5 and integrates itself into apps automatically.

BookSwim's rental plans range from 2 to 11 books at a time and from $14.99 to $35.99 monthly, with no limit on the number of rentals per month.

Founded in 2006 by NJIT graduates, George Burke and Shamoon Siddiqui, BookSwim has a strong focus on the environment. Not only does BookSwim.com encourage book-renting as a great way to reduce the number of trees cut down each year for virgin paper, but they also plant a tree for every Gift Subscription sold, through a partnership with EcoLibris.

For consumers, BookSwim acts as a supplement to local libraries and a relief for those who live debilitatingly far from their nearest rural library. With the cost of an average best-seller at over $22, BookSwim's rental plans are designed to save money over buying just one new book each month.

BookSwim also works with library systems and senior centers, providing multiple copies of new and popular books, as well as facilitating supplies for book discussion groups and summer reading programs.

Music Beta by Google

Music by Google is an online cloud music streaming service in beta test stage. This initial release is free, but it is also invitation only, and is only available to US users. Google provides a 20,000 song capacity for all beta testers; this differs from its competition such as amazon cloudplayer which provides a capacity limit based on file size (5GB for free). Users can upload their own music to this online service via a software provided by Google. The content can be played back either from your web browser or from an Android device running version 2.2 or later. On an Android device, the content can either be streamed or cached (saved) on the tablet/phone; this enables off-line listening for users. The Music Beta service supports a few major file formats: MP3, AAC, WMA, and FLAC. Which isn't a wide selection by any means, but this service is still in its development stage and many changes are likely to occur before the official release is made available for all members of the public.

Features

20,000 Songs capacity

US only, invitation only

Cloud streaming to web browser & Android 2.2+ device

Can cache songs to local storage

Users upload their own content

Supports: MP3, AAC, WMA, FLAC (converted to 320kbps MP3)

Content can be streamed from up to 8 devices

Music Manager software syncs your media library with Music Beta service

Tweets are 140 character length messages which answer the basic question, "what are you doing?". Users publish these tweets to their profile pages and everyone who has signed up to follow that particular user will receive the tweets as well. This micro-blogging framework has enabled news organizations, politicians and celebrities to interact with the community of users and provide real time updates in a way traditional media (newspapers, blogs, etc..) was never able to do.

YouTorrent is a meta search engine for torrent files. YouTorrent indexes the torrent files found on the most popular torrent websites like Mininova, The Pirate Bay, isoHunt, SumoTorrent, myBittorrent, Monova, Vuze, BitTorrent, LegitTorrents, SeedPeer, and BTjunkie. Often confused with µTorrent, the popular BitTorrent client, that is actually pronounced micro-torrent because of the "µ" character is mistaken for the letter "u". YouTorrent is similar to search engines such as Google, with a fairly simple home page prompting the user to search for files using the large text box. Other than its broad reach of torrent websites, a major draw to YouTorrent is its notable lack of advertising often found on Torrent sites. Often the ads are pornographic in nature, and thus YouTorrent provides a viable alternative to visiting the Torrent websites directly.

Explosive Growth

YouTorrent first launched on January 3rd, 2008, but quickly climbed to 150,000 searches within three days, thanks largely to a glowing review on TorrentFreak and the subsequent digg effect. YouTorrent claims that they receive 300,000 searches per day (as of Jan 31, 2008) and are projecting 500,000 searches per day by the end of February 2008. Torrent websites are seeing explosive growth in general, and YouTorrent may be the fastest growing of the lot, reaching the top 25 most visited torrent websites after only 2 months since launch.

Dropbox is a file synchronization/backup service accessible through Dropbox.com that uses cloud computing to allow users to store, share, and access multiple files and folders across the Internet. Its simplest application would involve installing a Dropbox client application on two computers, and then synchronizing files between the two. This means that when users travel between the two locations, he wouldn’t have to worry about bringing along a USB flash drive or CD, in that Dropbox automatically maintains the peer-to-peer relationship between the two. So if a user with 10 computers in her account deleted a file on one of them, the file would subsequently be deleted on all the other 9 as well; mind you, the file could be undeleted at any time. In addition, Dropbox keeps file revisions. The key aspect to this service also allows users to showcase their media files (pictures, videos) to the public via a URL.

OpenDNS is a free DNS resolution service. It provides the following two recursive nameserver addresses for public use, mapped to the nearest operational server location by Anycast routing:

208.67.222.222 (resolver1.opendns.com)

208.67.220.220 (resolver2.opendns.com)

OpenDNS was launched in July 2006 by hacker/entrepreneur David Ulevitch. It received venture capital funding from Minor Ventures, which is led by CNET founder Halsey Minor.

On July 10, 2006, the service was covered by digg, Slashdot, and Wired News, which resulted in an increase of DNS requests from just over one million requests on July 9 to 30 million on July 11.

On October 2, 2006, OpenDNS launched Phishtank, an online collaborative anti-phishing database.

In 2006, OpenDNS began using the DNS Update API from DynDNS to handle updates from users with dynamic IPs.

Since January 2007, OpenDNS provides geographically distributed servers in Seattle, Palo Alto, New York, Washington, D.C., London, with planned expansions to Chicago and Hong Kong.

On June 11th, 2007, OpenDNS started advanced web filtering to optionally block adult content for their free accounts.

Last.fm

Last.fm, "the social music revolution," is a UK-based music-community website with 21 million users. Last.fm provides internet radio, music recommendations, and some social networking features such as profile pages, the ability to "friend" other people, avatars, and user groups.

Audioscrobbling and Recommendations

In order for Last.fm to learn what sort of music a user prefer's, they employ a technique known as "audioscrobbling," in which users submit all the metadata (i.e. Artist, Track Name, etc.) about what they listen to, as they listen to it. This can be done using the Last.fm program, or through plugins/integration in the user's preferred media player. Last.fm then posts this data on the user's profile page, and analyzes to provide the user with music recommendations based off of what they already listen to. Last.fm also provides information about concerts and other music events by the user's favorite artists in the user's area.

Internet Radio

Last.fm provides numerous Internet radio stations. User's cannot specifically select a song to play or the order that the songs are played in, however users can skip and/or ban songs, as well as tag songs and mark the as "loved." Radio stations are based on either the user's music recommendations, music liked the user's "musical neighbors," or music that has been loved by the users when they previously listened. Radio stations can also be created on the fly by entering in any artist or tag. Last.fm will then play music similar to that of the artist entered, or play through all music with the specified tag. Internet radio can either be played through an in-page flash player, the official Last.fm program, or through third-party media players that have integrated Last.fm. The flash player can be embedded on any website, and on Facebook and Myspace profiles.

Social Networking

After the user creates a profile, Last.fm automatically generates a list of "musical neighbors," or people with similar music tastes. Last.fm also allows users to upload an avatar and friend other users. Users can also recommend music to each other, as well as inform other users about what concerts they have attended and/or planning to attend.
