Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB (WD20EADS)

Introduced on January 27 2009, the Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EADS is a 2TB internal desktop hard disk. Leapfrogging Seagate's 1.5TB model which has held the capacity record for 3 months, the 2TB WD20EADS is part of Western Digitals 'eco-friendly' Caviar Green line - meaning it uses less power than the standard 7200RPM drive. While this allows the drive to run cooler and quieter, it does have an overall negative effect on performance. Regardless, these drives massive capacities are ideal for long-term storage, for things such as media or backups - and thus this is what this line is intended for. It is also safe to bet that the higher platter density of the drive should improve overall performance next to the previous generations of Green drives. The drive is available immediately for the price of $299.

  • world's best 5-year manufacturer warranty (requires you to buy the drive through an authorized reseller however)
  • great for storage (huge capacity, fairly low noise levels and power consumption)
  • inexpensive considering it is the only 1.5TB drive on the market at the moment
  • new record for capacity, beats earlier maximum capacity by a whopping 50%
Cons
  • aging 7200.11 core technology is inferior and actually quite poor compared to competition in some instances (superior in others)
  • marketing claims do not live up to real world tests
