The Western Digital SiliconDrive III 1.8 is a 1.8" Micro SATA internal Solid State hard drive that is available in 15GB, 30GB and 60GB capacities. Read and write speeds are average for SSD at 100MB/s and 80MB/s respectively but what sets this series apart is it's reliability and lifespan, which has been rated at 3 million hours mean time between failure(MTBF). This is more than twice the rated life of the typical SSD, which can be attributed to a few of WD's own technologies. PowerArmor monitors the drives' voltage ahead of time in case of an otherwise drive-corrupting power failure(3 out of 4 drive failures are due to brownout, power spike or unstable voltage levels). SiSMART is an endurance monitor which keeps an eye on the write/erase cycles of each block, replacing them with spare blocks when they become worn out and sending that information to the host system to keep a record of remaining spare blocks. Announced in June 2009, this series is Western Digital's first attempt at SSD drives, which are a quickly expanding sector. They have been marketed to the business and also military professional who require top system stability and reliability, even offering an extended temperature version for use in more extreme conditions.
